$16 Million Grant for Harbor Transit

Harbor Transit received a $16 million Federal Buses and Facilities Grant to build a new Operations Center immediately south of Walmart on 172nd Avenue in Grand Haven Charter Township.

It is anticipated that the State of Michigan will provide a 20 percent match for this federal grant (i.e., $3.2 million). Further, with an additional $1.5 million that was set aside for this capital project by the Harbor Transit Board, there will be sufficient monies to begin the design, bidding, and construction for this much needed $20± million Operations Center.

Aldi Submits Site Plans

Aldi submitted a formal site plan application for Planning Commission approval for a grocery store at the intersection of Hayes Street and 172nd Avenue – immediately adjacent to the Speedway Service Station.

NORA Fundraiser

The Township financially supports the North Ottawa Recreation Authority (NORA) – along with the City of Grand Haven, the City of Ferrysburg and Robinson Township. Of the four municipalities, the Township is the largest contributor, providing about $55k annually.

Because of the free services that NORA provides to underprivileged families in the community, the authority holds an annual fundraiser to supplement the fees and municipal monies it receives to provide recreational opportunities to children within our community.

Again, this year, the fundraiser will be held at the Unicorn Tavern and will include a 50/50 Raffle and a Silent Auction. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased on-line at:

Annual 911 Academy

The Grand Haven Charter Township Fire Rescue Department, along with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, held the annual 911 Academy. This one-of-a-kind program is designed for teens, ages 15 to 18, who may be interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, fire services, or EMS.

Participants participated in a multitude of hands- on activities that offered them a glimpse of the overall emergency duties while learning some lifesaving skills.

The Public Safety staff specifically design the week so that participants stay busy with little downtime. This year there was a group of ten (10) participants who were given many physically demanding activities.

The teens participated in regular physical fitness training in addition to other physically demanding tasks, such as cutting up cars, searching smoke filled buildings, water rescue and defensive tactics – a challenging week that revolved around teamwork.

Lincoln Street Re-surfacing

Contractors for the Ottawa County Road Commission will begin a resurfacing project on Lincoln Street – from U.S. 31 to Lakeshore Drive.

This project will consist of milling existing asphalt, adding 2-foot paved shoulders for a new road width of twenty-eight feet, resurfacing with two lifts of new asphalt, and gravel shoulder restoration. This project is expected to last through the end of July – weather dependent.

The road will remain open to through traffic; however, traffic will be maintained using temporary lane closures under flag control during work hours.

The two pictures below show a fully involved house fire and the same scene ten minutes later. This is a good illustration on the effectiveness of the Township′s aerial fire truck in suppressing residential fires.
