July 2025 | Summer News Updates

The SOL Project Secures Continued Funding to Promote Smoke & Tobacco Free Communities

We are proud to share that The SOL Project has once again been awarded two contracts by the California Department of Public Health’s California Tobacco Prevention Program (CTPP). These grants will allow us to continue our vital work from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028.

Our efforts will focus on two key areas:

  • Ending the sale and use of commercial tobacco (Endgame) in Stockton and the Sacramento Valley
  • Advocating for smoke-free multi-unit housing and outdoor places in Sacramento County

Over the next three years, we will work closely with our community and partners to share information about the health benefits of smoke-free places. We will provide resources and support for people who want to quit smoking, help young people choose not to start, advocate for fair and healthy smoke-free policies for everyone, and work to end the sale of commercial tobacco.

Together, we are building a healthier, smoke and tobacco free future.

New Initiative Aims to Support Smoking Cessation for Black Mothers in Sacramento

We’re excited to share news about a new project titled "Saving Our Legacy: An African American Maternal Smoking Cessation Intervention for Sacramento County."

This important collaboration between UC Davis and The SOL Project will create and test a technology-based, culturally-tailored program to help African American/Black pregnant and parenting people (AAB/PPP) quit smoking tobacco and cannabis.

This research addresses critical disparities in maternal and infant health among African Americans in Sacramento County, aiming to reduce high rates of perinatal smoking of cigarettes, vape products and cannabis. By developing culturally tailored interventions, the project seeks to improve health outcomes and promote equity for African American pregnant and parenting individuals.

Made possible by funding from the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, this initiative will work alongside a Community Advisory Board to adapt proven cessation materials to include cannabis, newly emerging smoking products, reduce smoke exposure, and deliver messaging in ways that are accessible and preferred—like through videos, mobile apps, texts, or other digital tools.

This initiative is all about meeting families where they are and providing the right tools to support healthy, smoke-free lives.

Tobacco Industry Accountability Is Ending — But the Harm Isn’t

After more than 17 years of legal battles and public health advocacy, the U.S. tobacco industry will soon be free from a rare form of accountability: the court-mandated requirement to publicly admit its wrongdoing. Beginning in July 2025, Big Tobacco will no longer have to post corrective statements in stores, on cigarette packaging, or through other public messaging. Read more >>
