Keep It Cool, Inside and Out

By Kathryn Sears, Senior Director of Talent Arts

Sometimes, we are our own worst critics. As John Joseph Powell (a priest and author) said:

"It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being."

We hope all of you know your own beauty and feel your own worth in the grateful words of thanks and looks of caring that you see each day, not only from our residents and their family members, but also from your fellow Artists and leaders.

Take a page from our organizational values. As an employee of Arbor Acres, when we interact with others, we:

  1. See the other person’s side of things.
  2. Recognize that we want to solve an issue (not place blame).
  3. Find common ground to make things better.

Why not do the same for yourself and practice compassion and self-kindness?

  1. See your side: “Yes, I haven’t exercised in a week, but I need to remember that I’ve had a lot going on!”
  2. Identify the issue: “I’m not going to feel guilty when we all make mistakes. I’m going to focus on how to get back into a routine.”
  3. Set a short-term goal: “How about I stop worrying about daily exercise for now, and try for every other day?”

Other ways you can support yourself:

  • Often, committing our own time to do the things we need to do can be the biggest struggle. Why not set aside a half hour a day, or an hour every two to three days to catch up on things like making appointments and making needed calls or emails?
  • Financial stress? Check out Financial Pathways, which offers financial counselling services to help you manage your finances better and begin to plan for your future. They are a partner of Arbor Acres, and if you work with the Chaplains, the fee may be waived in emergency situations. Their website also has lots of great information.
  • Are you struggling with mental health issues? Visit www.supportlinc.com and log-in with the password arboracres. SupportLinc can refer you to a counselor, and the first 6 visits for any specific issue are fully paid for.

Welcome to Arbor Acres!

Artist Spotlight:

Tiara Pratt, Asbury Place Dining Supervisor

1. When did you start your career? Why did you choose Arbor Acres?

After having a couple of managerial positions in fast food, I decided to explore what it would be like to work in a different atmosphere. I just love to see the smile of a satisfied customer. So, on my search for something new, I attended a job fair and applied to be a part-time server in Asbury Place. I was hired in November 2013, and I had no clue what I was getting myself into. As it turns out, Arbor Acres was just what I needed. I feel like a part of a team, I'm always learning new things, and I was able to grow in my position, which has led me to where I am today. The residents were the icing on top. All the life stories and advice the residents share are more than I could ask for.

2. What is one positive thing that has happened to you in 2025?

One positive thing that happened to me this year is just being seen. Being chosen out of many employees to share my story is more than enough. The Artist Spotlight is something I look forward to reading each month. I enjoy getting to know someone’s story, which I may not know even if I see that person walk the halls all the time. To be the person that everyone will read about is beyond me. I am very grateful and look forward to many more days of being seen and heard.

3. Which ARTIST value resonates with you the most? (Artistry, Reverence, Talent, Innovation, Service, Truth)

Service is what resonates most with me. Everything I do every day is to make life easier for the next person. I take pride in what I do, and I do everything to the best of my ability.

4. Please share your favorite memory here so far.

This year, I was able to attend my very first food show: The Cheney Brothers Food Show in Myrtle Beach. It was definitely a trip to remember. I got to see how Arbor Acres chooses food vendors, as well as the new and exciting products that Cheney Brothers has to offer.

"Everything I do every day is to make life easier for the next person."

July's ARTIST value is:

reverence noun

  • I honor the residents and my co-workers.

  • I brighten others' day by smiling or acknowledging them as we pass.

  • I assume others have positive intent.

How to Make a Safe Splash This Summer

Man-made water features and natural bodies of water each have a unique set of risks; are you prepared for them?

POOL & SPLASH PAD SAFETY

  • Stay out if you're sick. Illness spreads fast in water, especially stomach bugs.
  • For infants/small children, use swim-specific diapers. Change them frequently and away from the pool.
  • Rinse before you swim. A quick shower helps remove dirt so pool chemicals can work effectively.
  • No going to the bathroom in the pool. It’s more than gross - it creates irritating chemical reactions.
  • Start children in swim lessons early. Consider lessons by age 4 to build water confidence and safety skills.
  • To prevent drowning, always supervise kids without distractions and use Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
  • Use SPF 15+ sunscreen. Reapply often, especially after swimming.
  • Wear sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing.
  • Skip the sugary drinks in the heat.

NATURAL WATER SAFETY (Lakes, Rivers, Streams)

  • Watch for fast currents, hidden rocks, sudden drop-offs, animals, and other people’s water activities.
  • Stay mindful of changing weather and water conditions.
  • Get out of the water at the first sign of thunder or lightning. Wait 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before re-entering.
  • Enter unfamiliar water feet first. Never dive unless the depth is clearly marked and over nine (9) feet deep.
  • Swim with a buddy, never alone.
  • Life jackets + water shoes = safer swimming.
  • Teach kids essential swim skills.
  • Know how to call for help and how to perform CPR in the absence of a lifeguard.
