Zonta District 1 #Shorts

CALL TO CONFERENCE

July 2025

Dear District 1 Fellow Zontians & Friends:

At last it’s summer, and at last it seems the record rainfall is turning into the sunshine that we all yearn for all winter. Most of our clubs suspend business meetings for these months, so there is plenty of time for vacations and trips…around our own locations or to faraway places. However, our committees continue to meet, so when the business meetings resume in September, we’ll get lots of news about old and new service projects and advocacy opportunities via the US Advocacy Caucus and the Canada Advocacy Caucus, thanks to Tonya Ozone and Carol Dobson. Many clubs also have fundraisers during the summer, and I wish you great success with those. One of the District committees that will be meeting frequently is the District Conference Committee, chaired by Tonya Ozone. Prepare yourself to be educated, inspired, entertained, and proud to be a Zontian with everything that is evolving. Registrations are open and rolling in, so start planning roommates and ride shares and saving your pennies for the Zonta store that will showcase items from different clubs. I am so excited!

There is so much to do in Boston in the Fall! Consider coming early for the conference and/or staying longer. Be sure to take in the iconic observation decks at the Prudential Center. Be in awe of the fall foliage in the Public Gardens or take a walk on the Esplanade along the Charles River. A tour along the Freedom Trail would bring history alive. There is a Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour that would be so appropriate so near Halloween. There is a Hop on, Hop Off Trolley with 13 stops that could fill up a day easily.

Below are the registration and hotel information links.

Mark your calendars and encourage your club members to attend.

Let us gather in unity, share our stories, and shape the future of Zonta, stronger together.

Thank you to the clubs who have submitted their annual reports. I have been very impressed with all that clubs have accomplished. Be sure to take a look at them. If your club’s report is not there, encourage your president to send it in. District 1 is made up of amazing people doing amazing work and inspiring me every day. Thanks for the opportunity to be your governor.

In Zonta spirit,

Donna Raycraft

What's Happening Around the District

Check out the stories and pictures at www.zontadistrict1.org/news-events.

Zonta Club of Amherst

Members of the Amherst Club hold an annual Zonta Fibre Arts Bazaar and Zonta Cafe in October, selling beautiful creations and fibre arts supplies. Most recently they held their annual month of giving calendar and donated the food items to the Amherst Food Bank.

Zonta Club of Concord NH

Each year the club collects purses and stuffs them with personal hygiene items. They accept donated books at Hilltop Consignment and sell then to fund scholarships. Members actively advocate to end child marriage, say no to violence against women, and improve the lives of women and girls.

Zonta Club of Chelsea & North Shore

Members recently delivered Scholarship Checks to the School Districts of Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, Everett and Saugus. For many years the Zonta Club has donated these scholarships to 5 Senior High School women who will be attending college.

Zonta Club of Malden

Malden has had a very active year. Most recently, they celebrated Earth Day with a tree planting at the Forest Dale Cemetery, as part of the Zonta Says NOW campaign; awarded scholarships to four graduating seniors in a celebration recognizing the students as well as Malden’s Z-Club members; and held another successful Women Making a Difference event. Annual Report linK

Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley

The Quaboag Valley club continues to increase visibility working with local partners - sponsoring the ninth annual Period Project, honoring Women Making a Difference, awarding service grants, and gathering items for To Go bags.  Annual Report link

Zonta Club of Berkshire County

The Berkshire Club grew to 44 members, held a Women's Day Dinner honoring local women, held successful fundraising projects, launched a New Women in Business grant and Christian Center Boutique Partnership, built their sponsorship base, and launched a Zonta Store! Annual Report link

Zonta Club of Northampton Area

We started planning for the club’s 90th Anniversary in July of 2024. Since it was going to take a long time to research the history and make preparations, get funding, etc., it was voted to delay the celebration until March 2025, which was late by one year, but who’s counting! With the help of many friends and family members, our club members pulled together to make it the most impressive party ever.

With Carolyn Geer, CEO of International Language Institute, as MC, the program ran smoothly and elegantly in the fabulous facilities of Collaborative for Educational Services. And the video presentations prepared by Angela Burke tied it all together seamlessly. Nine $250 awards were made in the name of the nine honorees: journalist Alice Scott Ross, Professor and Ikebana Master Verda Dale, Computer Engineer and Past District Governor Lynn Goodhue, Linguist Lexi Johnson, Past District Governor Linda Gibbon, 50 year member Audrey Millgate, Farmer and artist Ava Blum-Carr, ILI Student Maedeh Ghasemzadeh, Community Activist Lisa Lapierre. Honoree donations were made to Zonta International Foundation; Girls Inc.; Community Action's Young Family Program; International Language Institute and Western Massachusetts Asylum Support.

Zonta Club of South County Rhode Island

Members held a Period Project & Period Poverty Awareness Week  During April and early May, the club collected cash and feminine hygiene products to donate to local organizations and schools. They assembled 98 kits and a number of boxes of various products. For women and girls living with homelessness or poverty, having a period is a financial burden that often causes shame and embarrassment. Basic menstrual hygiene products are costly, but pads and tampons are considered “non-essential” by the federal government, so they are not covered by SNAP and WIC programs. What’s more, women and teens who are homeless or financially strapped often lack consistent access to hygiene products.    Annual Report link

Our district's emerging E-club is building both its membership and its resolve to become a new club. Like other E-clubs throughout ZI, they are geographically diverse and range from Florida to Maine and in between. They are eager to build their membership to the required 15 members so that they can apply to charter, so if anyone knows of someone who might not live near an existing club but who wants to be part of a growing movement to stand for women's rights, please have them get in touch with their current leadership: heatheroates@gmail.com or trishtesoriero@gmail.com. This club is currently meeting by Zoom on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30
