The photograph above captures children at play at the Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre (JPBC) on June 23 and it’s a reminder that even in times of great uncertainty, moments of joy and healing still happen.
In recent weeks, JPBC has seen a growing number of families from the West Bank arriving in Jerusalem for care. Sobhi’s mother, pictured in the photograph, traveled over two hours from Jenin, and shared: “Despite the difficulties of war, I crossed three checkpoints to reach the Basma Centre. I insist on keeping my child’s therapy sessions. I feel safe here.” Despite daily alerts and instability in the region, the Centre remains open as an essential service, thanks to the tireless dedication of its staff.
At JPBC’s satellite unit at Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, the need is equally urgent. Between January and May of this year, JPBC’s team admitted 595 children—169 with post-acute disabilities and 426 with chronic conditions. With just eight staff members on the ground, their commitment is extraordinary.
Ismail, a JPBC physiotherapist in Gaza, described their collective mission saying, “When I see a child walk or even smile again after a therapy session, I feel like I am helping to restore a part of their humanity that was taken away. My message to the world is that our children are not just numbers in the news. They are living souls who deserve to live with dignity and be given the chance to grow, learn, and dream like other children around the world.”
Your gift to AFEDJ ensures that these children, their families, and countless others across the Holy Land, continue to receive the care they need.
