Silent Auction
During the week leading up to our Hydrangea Festival Garden Tours, we will be holding a silent auction of themed bags and baskets donated by local individuals, businesses, and organizations. The auction will be open for bids from July 6th at 10 am through July 11th at 4 pm.
We will post a list of all the bags and baskets in the auction online so that folks who can't bid in person can place an absentee bid. The list will be posted by July 1, 2026.

| | Sturgis Library Reads: America at 250 | | |
July 1st—August 19th, 2026
In honor of the United States Semiquincentennial, Sturgis Library's 2026 Adult/Young Adult summer reading challenge is inspired by the Declaration of Independence. Sign your "John Hancock" to our signup declaration with a feather pen and receive your own copy of the Declaration of Independence to keep.
From there, choose from a curated list of essays and primary source materials that place the Declaration in historical context, including local connections, its legacy across history, and more. Prefer to chart your own course? You're welcome to select your own related reading and share recommendations with fellow patrons.
Complete the challenge and you'll earn a pocket-sized copy of the U.S. Constitution issued by the National Archives, a commemorative "Sturgis Library Reads America at 250" button pin, and a chance to win fantastic prizes.
One lucky winner will receive a gift-edition pocket hardcover bundle containing the complete texts of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Additional prizes include Sturgis Library hats, totes, mugs, and more, plus gift cards to some of our favorite local places!
Visit the Library during the month of July to see rare documents from our archives featuring signatures from key Revolutionary War figures including signers of the Declaration of Independence!

Location: Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary
(Due to limited parking, participants will meet at Sturgis Library and carpool to hike location)
Time: 9:15am at Sturgis Library 3090 Main St. Barnstable Village
Spending time outside is beneficial to your body and mind. Let's gather, walk, and reap the benefits of spending time in nature, together!
This trail will take about one hour to complete. Participants should bring water and a snack, wear comfortable shoes for trail walking and should consider wearing sunscreen and bug spray.
We kindly request no dogs join us on the trail.

Together, participants will thoughtfully analyze and discuss a select picture book.
This gathering will focus on The Invisible Bear by Cecile Metzger.
Copies of the book will be made available to participants at the gathering.

Join The Letter Writing Club and pledge to write one letter each month for the entire year.
Club members are encouraged to gather at Sturgis Library once a month where stationery, art supplies, a letter prompt, and a sense of connection will be provided.

Rare Archival Documents
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Sturgis Library will be displaying rare documents from our archives that feature signatures from key Revolutionary War figures including Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and more.

Larry Sheinfeld
Larry Sheinfeld has been interested in photography since childhood, and has continued to photograph “seriously” — not without some humor — since he was first able to gain access to a darkroom as a junior in high school. He taught art — including painting, drawing, digital art, photography, and digital photography — for thirty years at Bedford High School, and retired fairly recently.
Larry’s interests as a teacher included interdisciplinary teaching and learning (for many years, he was part of a team teaching a “Humanities” course, with components of literature, music, and visual art) and helping students formulate and work towards answering interesting questions having broad interest and compelling relevance. As faculty advisor of the high school’s literary magazine for over two decades, Larry was able to share with students his specific fascination with how literary writing can work synergistically with pictures.
