It's time to put on our community scientist hats and rejoin our fellow concerned citizens to help conserve our endangered monarchs. Come join us at the RCRCD Greenbelt Monarch Habitat and become a community scientist gathering data on eggs, caterpillars and butterflies!

The habitat was established via a grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board of California. That grant concluded in 2023 and the RCRCD now funds the maintenance and community science program. The data collected goes on iNat, Western Milkweed Monarch Mapper and the Monarch Larval Monitoring Program.

To qualify to volunteer at this project you must watch a very short training video (to correctly identify instar stages in particular) and sign a waver. To obtain the video and waver you need to contact Michele Felix-Derbarmdiker.

Thank you for your support of this fun and important project!

Garden Tips for July

What to Plant in July

  • Flowers - Direct seed annuals, such as alyssum, celoisa, sunflower, zinnias, and marigolds
  • Vegetables - At higher, cooler elevations, direct seed summer squash, bush beans, summer savory, and kohlrabi
  • If fruit isn't setting on your melons and squash, use a soft brush to hand-pollinate the flowers and increase production. Use the brush to gather pollen from male flowers, then brush it onto the female flower. (Female flowers have a tiny embryo fruit at the base of their petals)

Maintenance

  • Watering and pest control are top of the "To Do" list
  • Waster after midnight and before 10am to reduce the chance of fungal infection and to conserve moisture
  • Dig and divide over-crowed irises and bulbs when the foliage dies off
  • Fertilize plants grown in containers (watering flushes out nutrients)
  • Pull weeds when they first appear

Spray

  • All fruit and nut trees: Check IPM for safe and effective sprays
  • Spray off aphids with water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Note: All the effective insecticidal sprays kill bees and other beneficial insects. Do not spray while trees are in bloom.
