| | El Camino Mourns the Passing of Beloved Warrior, Harold Tyler | | |
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Harold Tyler, El Camino alumnus and former longtime Director of Student Development, on July 13, 2026. At 79, he was a devoted father and grandfather.
After graduating from Compton High School in 1964, Harold joined the U.S. Army and continued in the Army Reserves until 1977. He earned an associate degree from El Camino in 1975, and later completed a bachelor’s degree in business from CSUDH. As an avid basketball player, Harold was a volunteer assistant coach for the ECC basketball team and later announced Warrior basketball games.
As an ECC student, Harold served as an officer with student government. After graduation, he landed his first job on campus as a specialist in the Student Activities Office, and 13 years later, became director of student development, a position he held until his retirement in December 2010. Harold inspired countless students during his 35 years at El Camino. “El Camino College is a special place. So many of our students come back to visit, and it is great to see them so successful. That has been the best part of my job."

The Harold Tyler Scholarship has been established at the El Camino College Foundation to honor his many years of service to El Camino. To make a memorial gift, you may donate online, or send a check to the Foundation office. Please indicate “Harold Tyler” as the designation.
