Hello!

There is still plenty happening at PILI as we move through the summer! We hope you will join us on Wednesday, August 5th from 5:30 to 7:30 at The Gage for our annual Alumni Reception. Together, we will welcome our newest class of Law Student Interns and Graduate Fellows into the Alumni Network and celebrate the impact they have made this summer—as well as the careerlong commitment of our Alumni to public interest law and pro bono service.

PILI Giving Day is also coming up on Monday, August 17th. This year, we invite you to Meet the Moment with us by supporting opportunities for future Interns and Fellows, strengthening our pro bono efforts, and expanding access to legal assistance across Illinois.

It is also award season at PILI! Nominations are now open for our Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee Awards, presented during Pro Bono Week in October as well as our Annual Awards, presented at the Annual Awards Luncheon on December 9th. Nominations are due Friday, September 4th.

In this issue, you can also read about the successful 2026 Annual Pro Bono Reception and the continued expansion of Illinois’ MCLE for Pro Bono Pilot Program one year after its launch. We hope you will join us at an upcoming event, nominate a deserving award recipient, and help shape justice tomorrow by supporting PILI Giving Day.

Sincerely,

The Staff at PILI

PILI's Giving Day is August 17th!

At PILI, we believe everyone deserves meaningful access to justice. Every day, we turn that belief into action by preparing the next generation of public interest and pro bono advocates, engaging attorneys in pro bono service, and expanding access to legal services for communities across Illinois.

This year, we're inviting you to Meet the Moment with us.

On Monday, August 17th, your gift will help create opportunities for future PILI Interns and Fellows, strengthen pro bono initiatives, and ensure more individuals and families have access to the legal help they need.

Together, our actions today help shape justice tomorrow.

It's award season at PILI!

We are now accepting nominations for pro bono awards through our

Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committees to be given during the celebration of

Pro Bono Week in October and our annual awards will be presented at our

Annual Awards Luncheon on December 9th in Chicago.

Nominations are due by Friday, September 4th.

Staff Spotlight

This month, PILI celebrates Michael Bergmann's 20th anniversary with the organization. Michael joined PILI in 2006 as Director of Programs and has served as Executive Director since 2010, leading the organization's continued growth and statewide impact.

Under Michael's leadership, PILI has expanded its Law Student Internship Program, increasing both the number of funded internships and the stipends awarded to future public interest lawyers. He has also spearheaded the creation of PILI’s Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committees across Illinois, broadened PILI's direct legal services through a statewide network of volunteer attorneys, and strengthened the organization's financial foundation, enabling PILI to expand its reach while further advancing equal access to justice.

Beyond PILI, Michael is a respected leader in the legal profession. The Illinois Supreme Court appointed him to the Illinois Judicial Conference, the strategic planning body for the Illinois Judicial Branch. He also serves on the Boards of Governors of both the American Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association and began a one-year term as ISBA Secretary in June 2026. Michael also serves on the Dean's Council for DePaul University College of Law from where he received his Juris Doctor.

As PILI celebrates this milestone, it recognizes Michael's two decades of dedicated service, collaborative leadership, and unwavering commitment to expanding access to justice. His vision has helped strengthen PILI's impact across Illinois and position the organization for continued success in the years ahead as PILI prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027.
