July 2026 Traffic Volume

The Town of Banff Traffic Management Team would like to share the following vehicle volume comparison charts and graphs with our stakeholders. Please note that all volume counts represent two-way traffic. For detailed definitions on each section of this report please see the end of this email.

July saw a return to growth after three months of year-over-year decreases. Traffic volumes on the Bow River Bridge and Mountain Avenue remain significantly lower than in 2025. The Rimrock renovations were completed at the end of June, so Mountain Avenue traffic volumes should now reflect normal seasonal demand.

Main Entrances

Traffic counters at the two main entrances to the town of Banff recorded a total of 899,191 vehicles in the month of July 2026, which is a 4% increase from July 2025 and a 7% increase from pre-pandemic 2019.

Year-to-date in 2026, up to the end of July, 3,946,325 vehicles were recorded at the two main entrances to the town of Banff. This is a 1% decrease compared with 2025 and a 4% increase compared with 2019.

July Weather Overview

• The average daily high in July 2026 was 25.4 C, the average daily low 7.2 C, and 5.9 mm precipitation.
• The average daily high in July 2025 was 21.5 C, the average daily low 7.5, and 98.7 mm precipitation.
• The average daily high in July 2024 was 26.2 C, the average daily low 8.7 C, and 11.1 mm precipitation.

The average daily high for July in Banff is 22.5 C, the average daily Low 6.8 C, and averages 46.9 mm precipitation. Climate normals are computed over a 30-year period to eliminate year-to-year variations.

Bow River Bridge

In July, 433,074 vehicles crossed the Bow River Bridge. This is 4% fewer than in July 2025 and 17% fewer than in July 2019, before the pandemic.

Year-to-date, there have been 7% fewer bridge crossings than in 2025 and 18% fewer than in 2019.

The historical decrease in traffic volumes across the bridge since pre-COVID 2019 may be attributed to several factors, including increased active transportation modes, free transit for locals, intercept parking combined with promotion and uptake of transit use.

Mountain Avenue

In July 2026, 123,851 vehicles were recorded on Mountain Avenue. This is 11% fewer than in July 2025 and 29% fewer than in July 2019.

Year-to-date, the number of vehicles recorded on Mountain Avenue is 29% lower than in 2025 and 34% lower than in 2019.

Roam Ridership

In July 2026, Roam Public Transit local Routes 1 and 2 carried a combined 313,032 riders. This is 20% more than in July 2025 and 46% more than in July 2024.

This ridership is estimated to have replaced more than 126,223 private vehicle trips, helping reduce congestion and emissions in Banff.

Definitions

Main Entrances Monthly Total Vehicle Volumes: This number references the total number of vehicles recorded (both incoming and outgoing combined) at traffic count stations located at the two main entrances to town: on Norquay Road and on Banff Avenue. This number equals ((Norquay Rd. incoming volume + Norquay Rd. outgoing volume) + (Banff Ave. incoming volume + Banff Ave. outgoing volume)). The vehicle volume reported is not representative of the total number of vehicles in town in one month; it is simply how many vehicles are moving in and out of the town over the course of one month.

Bow River Bridge Crossings on Banff Avenue - Monthly Total Vehicle Volume: This number references the total number of vehicles recorded (both southbound and northbound combined) over the course of one month at a traffic count station located on the bridge. Full monthly data collection at this location began in August 2016.

Mountain Avenue Monthly Total Vehicle Volume: This number references the total number of vehicles recorded (both southbound and northbound combined) over the course of one month at a traffic count station located on Mountain Ave., around the corner and up the hill from Middle Springs Drive.

Total Vehicle Volume year-to-date (YTD): This number references the total number of vehicles recorded (both incoming and outgoing combined) between January 1 and the end of the reporting month at traffic count stations identified above.
