Greetings!

What we need from our community changes as we move through different stages of life. So where do you find your people? How do you learn new skills, build relationships, or discover support when you need it most?

If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, I invite you to explore the newly refreshed JFCS of Minnesota website and discover the many programs and events designed to help you connect. Whether you’re a new parent looking to meet others in a similar stage of life; a grandparent wanting to learn infant and child CPR; someone seeking support for addiction; or a caregiver for a loved one living with dementia, JFCS is here to help you find connection.

WAIVER CASE MANAGEMENT

Everyone deserves a place in the community

By Kristi Murray • Director of ParentChild+ and Waiver Case Management

The U.S. Department of Justice released a memorandum last month arguing that states are not required under federal law to provide services to people with disabilities in community settings instead of institutions. While the memo does not change existing law or Supreme Court precedent, it has sparked concern among disability advocates because it challenges decades of support for the principle that people with disabilities should have the opportunity to live and thrive in their communities whenever possible.

At JFCS of Minnesota, our commitment has not changed.

THE ADVICE CORNER

The Advice Corner: Concerned about teen’s mental health during

summer break

This month’s question: Since the beginning of summer break, I’ve noticed my teen is more irritable and withdrawn, and I’m concerned about their mental health. What should I do?

Angela Cowan, MSW, LICSW • Counseling Program Manager and Therapist:

Summer can be a welcome break from the busyness of the school year, and teens may welcome the opportunity for more free time, a break from homework, and more time to spend with friends. The swift shift from the expectations of the school year to more unstructured time during the summer break and perhaps less opportunities to connect with friends and peers can be a tricky transition to navigate – and it can lead to an increase in symptoms of anxiety and depression.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT

Virtual Caregiver Support Group provides welcoming and

compassionate space

By Tara Burns, LPCC • JFCS Therapist

Are you caring for a spouse, partner, aging family member, or loved one living with memory loss, Parkinson’s disease, or another chronic condition? While caregiving is often a profound expression of love and commitment, it can also bring emotional, physical, and mental challenges. At times, the responsibilities can feel overwhelming or isolating, but you don’t have to navigate them alone.

Our online Caregiver Support Group provides a welcoming and compassionate space where caregivers can connect, share experiences, and find support from others who understand the unique joys and challenges of the caregiving journey. Whether you are providing daily hands-on care, supporting a loved one from a distance, exploring community resources, or considering future care options, you are welcome here.
