Magic and Miracles
Contemporary American culture is steeped in capitalist notions of productivity and "earning" our worth. Commitments to flourishing and to honoring our inherent worthiness are radical acts that our Unitarian Universalist faith calls us to do. Let's explore lessons from Disney's Encanto that illustrate how we can be the magic and miracle for each other. Our Guest preacher is Rev. Beth Monhollen and Ann McCallister is our Worship Associate.

Staff Highlight: Dan Baer
by Becky Taveirne, member of the Board of Trustees
| |
Most likely, you already know Dan as the first welcoming face you see upon entering our building each Sunday. His willingness to bring his best self and be a supportive part of our beloved community really comes through. Here’s a bit more about him…
Dan has been our Lobby Staff member since February, 2012. Doing things we might take for granted, he opens & closes the building on Sundays and ensures the lights and temperature controls and air purifiers are on in all our rooms. His main task is to greet people and answer questions our members or visitors might have. Dan says he truly enjoys greeting and connecting with people and he readily communicates that with his positive attitude and quick smile. Dan would like our congregants to know that since he’s been part of the church for so long, he really enjoys and values the feeling of being a closely intertwined member of our treasured church community.

Hats off to Susan Comstock | |
|
Our hats are off to Susan Comstock for her many hours dedicated to nurturing the health, vitality, and efficiency of our Endowment Fund. She has brought a deep well of knowledge and experience to the Endowment Task Force and the Endowment Committee chairmanship. She filled a vacancy directly as chair of the trustees and immediately began working on documenting/modifying financial procedures, and modernizing banking relationships.
She also worked on updating the Endowment bylaws to reflect best practices. Before all that, Susan was our treasurer for many years, served as a Member-At-Large on the Integrated Stewardship Council after stepping down from Treasurer, as a member of the Budget Working Group, and served as one of the Auction co-chairs. Susan, we are so grateful for your help in making and keeping UCE fiscally healthy and for all the ways you help our congregation to live our mission.

Plays are a great avenue for exploring what it means to be human. Play reading in a group is an easy and fun way to do that, get to know more of each other, and find an outlet for your dramatic flair. If you are interested in possibly joining a play-reading group at UCE, email Sarah Vanderwicken. Once we see how many are interested, we'll figure out a gathering time and place

New Sanctuary Chairs Feedback: Round Two
Thanks to the 106 people who provided feedback on the first round of test chairs. We listened to some of you who had further concerns and questions. So, this time we have a variety of wood chairs to compare with the winning ergonomic type chair. We sought to get samples that had colors more along the line of what we might purchase. We are running this feedback period from July 7-23rd. The chairs are sitting at the back of the sanctuary with the feedback forms ready. Please put your completed form in the box. So please take a moment to join the fun of “putting your derriere in the chair” and give us your feedback.
Your feedback is sought on: Comfort, Attractive Design, Color Scheme and Weight

UCE Fiction Book Group
Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton
| |
|
The Fiction book group will meet TONIGHT Friday, July 21, 2023 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
Birnam Wood is a self-described guerrilla gardening collective that sometimes legally, and sometimes less so, cultivates wherever it can, “along verges and fence lines, beside motorway offramps, inside demolition sites and in junkyards filled with abandoned cars.” Through “doing instead of talking,” these feisty idealists hope for widespread, lasting social change. They want people to see how much fertile land goes to waste.
Then the outlaws come to town. For an especially delicious spread of fertile land recently freed up by climate devastation, Birnam Wood is up against an American billionaire doomsteader intent on acquiring the land to support his end of the world bunker. For starters – the land is also, of course, rich in minerals. Environmentalists among us will be in their element in this rodeo!
