Dear Tanque Verde High School Community,
It is the end of another week but my message is the same-we are going to be okay! Thank you for your feedback from last week. Even though teachers are technically off contract they are heavily involved in working to create greatness for your students. I also wanted to thank those who participated in the dine out event at Casa del Rio last night for our football program. While social distance dining is not exciting it was fun to say hi to so many families in the parking lot while I was grabbing my dinner to go.
As many of you might have heard, yesterday, Governor Ducey made an announcement that the decision for when to return to in-person instruction was moved to local health and education authorities. We will have more information soon about what the evaluation process will be for what will deem a safe and appropriate return to campus.
Please remember to complete your online registration paperwork. This is not just for new students-this replaces the paper packets families have had to fill out and deliver to school in the past. Please get this task done by Friday,
June 31st to help us with our planning.
Counseling Department:
This year both of our counselors will be new to Tanque Verde High School. Currently, Ms. Tammy Hille is serving as our sole counselor until our second counselor is confirmed next week. Please contact Ms. Tammy Hille (
thille@tanq.org
) with all counseling and schedule questions.
Non TVUSD Online Learning Platforms:
Another friendly reminder that students should not sign up for any online programs on their own without checking in with
thille@tanq.org
first Luckily we have been able to catch a number of families before registering for classes that would not have been accredited courses students could use for graduation. Thank you so much to so many of you who have already reached out! A few families had planned on taking a class from ASU Prep this fall. You are still able to proceed with this option this year. Our top priority is ensuring that your student is supported in meeting their goals while at TV so they can meet their goals once they leave.
Schedules:
Schedules will be available on ParentVue and StudentVue on July 31st.
We want all of our students to have exactly what they need to meet their 4 year plan goals. As such, we will only be able to honor schedule change requests that are needed to ensure students get the classes they need to meet their 4 year plan. We will send you the protocols for schedule change as well as the digital schedule change request form next week. Students should contact
thille@tanq.org
for additional questions. If you are new family and need assistance with course selection pleases email Ms. Hille as well.
A number of families reached out to make sure that in addition to core classes, their students would still be able to move forward in their elective coursework. Yes! We have a number of systems that will support our students to continue learning in these classes:
Fine Arts Plan:
Teachers will utilize a blend of Edgenuity, music software and google classroom.
Physical Education Plan:
Students who are registered for PE will take Edgenuity PE. Supplementary physical fitness activities will also be available that students can do at home.
Alternative PE Plan:
We are considering ideas for an alternative PE credit plan for students who normally get credit through athletics and band. As it is still a possibility that athletics will not occur this fall (or on a limited basis), we want to offer students another option if they do not want to wait to get this credit next year (or cananott due to being senior). Seniors who do not have a PE credit and were planning to use an activity this year for credit should contact
thille@tanq.org
(Tammy Hille) to register to take Edgenuity PE this fall if they need the credit for graduation.
CTE/JTED Learning Plan:
Many of our CTE classes will be using the Edgenuity curriculum with courses of different names that still support the standards and learning for those classes. As you can imagine, some classes are challenging to do online due to the hands on tools and projects that are performed. It is going to be okay! Teachers in those programs are creating excellent plans to support students. In some cases, students will use google classroom instead of edgenuity to participate in those CTE classes. If you have specific questions, teachers in those classes will be available through email. We will use this time to front load the safety and technical skills students need to learn before starting on the hands on projects.
Technology/Materials Pick-Up Plan:
We will have a materials pick up day for students on Wednesday, August 5th with August 6th and 7th serving as make up days. We will send a schedule out in the next week about the hours assigned for student last names/grade levels. Please make sure to complete the request form in this newsletter if you need technology for your student. Please remember that
existing technology a family has will suffice for online learning
. If a family wants to buy their students their own device, we recommend a Chromebook because students will be able to use them on campus when it is safe to return to in person instruction. Chromebooks are NOT necessary to utilize the Edgenuity curriculum, but only Chromebooks will be supported by our network on the physical campus. Again, if you have been thinking about purchasing your child a device, this might be the perfect time, but it is not required. Also on August 5-7th, teachers will have additional supplies for specific classes such as textbooks and other supplementary materials.
Summer Assignments:
Students should continue their summer assignments for honors, Advanced Placement and dual enrollment coursework even if they plan to stay online all year. The teachers in these programs will still be overseeing the learning in those honors/AP/DE courses. Students who have questions about these assignments should direct them towards the teachers in those programs.
Coming Soon:
High School can be intimidating for families, especially with all of the new information that is constantly available! It is so important that you are getting relevant information in a timely fashion. In order to give families access to the most relevant information in the Tanque Verde School District, all TV schools are now part of the Remind 101 network! Remind 101 allows the district and school to send information, newsletters and updates through text message updates. This will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Many groups have been using Remind 101 and now all accounts will be connected as an entire district for efficiency and ease!
Supporting your student:
For the planners out there I encourage you to read the article listed in the resources section of this letter to start thinking about what this fall will look like for your student. I mentioned last week that we suggest students plan for each day as though they were going to school instead of staying in bed all day watching TV while attempting to do online work. The socio-emotional repercussions in this routine can be just as intense as the education pitfalls. Consider these 5 elements:
1. Build a Schedule
2. Model Hard Work and Persistence
3. Set up a Designated Workspace
4. Get to Know the Online Learning Platform
5. Stay in Communication with Your Student's Teachers
