Supervisor Andersen Celebrates
Future Community Leaders
Supervisor Andersen recently attended the culminating event for the pilot APAPA Tri-Valley Summer Civic Engagement & College Bridge Program, which was supported through a District 2 Community Impact Grant.
Throughout the week, students participated in a hands-on civic leadership program, meeting with elected officials, school board trustees, higher education leaders, legislative staff, attorneys, and other community leaders. Participants also developed and shared their personal leadership stories, building confidence, communication skills, and a stronger understanding of civic engagement.
This year's cohort included eight students from District 2, along with participants from other Supervisorial Districts in our County. Supervisor Andersen congratulated the students on their accomplishments and thanked APAPA for investing in the next generation of community leaders.

Supervisor Andersen Takes Flight with ConFire
Supervisor Candace Andersen recently joined the Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ConFire) aboard one of its firefighting helicopters for an aerial tour of Contra Costa County. During the flight, she had the opportunity to see the County from a unique perspective while learning more about the District's aerial firefighting operations.
The tour included visits to several newly installed helipods, strategically located water storage sites that allow helicopter crews to quickly refill during wildfire and vegetation fire responses. These helipods help reduce turnaround times, enabling firefighters to make more frequent water drops and respond more effectively during emergencies.
Supervisor Andersen appreciated the opportunity to witness firsthand the planning, coordination, and innovation that go into protecting Contra Costa County's communities. She thanked ConFire for its continued commitment to public safety and wildfire preparedness.

Contra Costa's Community Health Assessment
Contra Costa Health invites all residents to participate in the Community Health Assessment Survey to help shape future health and well-being priorities throughout the County.
The survey is available in 15 languages and responses will help identify local needs, guide future programs and services, and ensure that diverse voices from across Contra Costa County are represented.
The survey is open through July 31st, and everyone who completes it will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card.
We encourage you to take a few minutes to complete the survey and share it with your family, friends, neighbors, and community networks. Every response helps build a healthier Contra Costa County.

Contra Costa Fire Protection District's Annual Line of Duty Death Memorial Service
Each year, on July 21st, ConFire remembers Captain Matt Burton and Engineer Scott Desmond who tragically died, while courageously attempting to rescue an elderly couple trapped inside their burning home. The event takes place at the ConFire Training Center, in front of the Memorial Wall which contains the names of all ConFire personnel who have died as a result of their fire service.
Supervisor Andersen attended this year's memorial service to pay her respects and stand alongside the families, friends, and fellow firefighters in remembering these fallen heroes. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage, dedication, and selflessness demonstrated by first responders who risk their lives every day to protect the residents of Contra Costa County.

Nominations Now Open for the 2026
Threads of Hope Awards
Do you know someone making a difference in the East Bay? The East Bay Leadership Council, in partnership with Diablo Magazine, is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Threads of Hope Awards, recognizing outstanding volunteers and philanthropists who are strengthening our communities through service and generosity.
Awards will honor individuals, businesses, foundations, and organizations whose dedication, leadership, and charitable efforts have made a lasting impact throughout the East Bay.
If you would like to submit a nomination form, please do so by the July 31st deadline.
The East Bay Leadership Council invites community members to attend the 2026 Installation Awards, where exceptional East Bay leaders will be recognized for their vision, leadership, and commitment to public service, including presentations of the Ellen O. Tauscher Distinguished Service Award, Advocate of the Year Award, and the East Bay Leadership Medal.

Make Your Voice Heard on Bay Area Transportation Funding Priorities
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is seeking public input on their Draft 2027 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP includes more than 400 transportation projects with over $13.8 billion in committed federal, state and local funding for federal fiscal years 2027 through 2030. The TIP's goal is to identify near-term transportation funding priorities for projects throughout the Bay Area, including investments in transit, highways, local streets and roads, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, bridges, and freight movement.
The public comment period deadline is August 12th at 5PM.

Highway 24 Traffic & Advisory Updates
Emergency Repairs in Lafayette
Caltrans is conducting emergency repairs on eastbound Highway 24 in Lafayette near the El Nido Ranch Road underpass through October 1st.
Closure Schedule: The right shoulder and Lane 4 (slow lane) are closed nightly, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM. Three lanes remain open to traffic while crews stabilize the hillside and repair a retaining wall.
Caldecott Tunnel Overnight Bore Closures (July 27th – 29th)
Caltrans has scheduled overnight maintenance and repairs for Bores 1, 2, and 3 of the Caldecott Tunnel on SR-24 from 10 PM to 4:30 AM:
- Monday, July 27th: Bore #1 Closure (Eastbound)
- Tuesday, July 28th: Bore #2 Closure (Eastbound)
- Wednesday, July 29th: Bore #3 Closure (Westbound)
Note: At least one bore in each direction will remain open at all times.
Traveler Tip: Motorists should expect delays, allow extra travel time, and use caution through construction zones. For real-time traffic updates, visit QuickMap.dot.ca.gov.

Board of Supervisors Want County Resident's Priorities!
The Board of Supervisors has engaged a consultant to gather information from county residents to identify community priorities for any future Measure X funding that might become available to allocate.
Current Federal and State funding cuts mean that the County may not be able to maintain all services, that is why your input is so important.
Please take 10 minutes to complete the County's Community Priorities Survey. Your feedback will help guide future planning and ensure County leaders better understand what matters most to residents.

Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife
Committee Accepting Grant Applications
The Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee is accepting grant applications until 5 PM on July 27th from nonprofits, schools, and government agencies seeking to enhance local fish and wildlife resources.
The Committee encourages projects focused on habitat improvement, public education, scientific research, protection of threatened and endangered species, and addressing human-wildlife interactions. Special consideration will be given to projects that promote community outreach, multilingual education, and collaboration with law enforcement and community organizations regarding fish and game regulations.
Grant funding comes from fines collected for violations of California fish and game laws. The Committee will review applications and make recommendations to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, which has final approval authority.

Behavioral Health Board
Supervisor Andersen is seeking applicants from District 2 for seats on the Contra Costa County Behavioral Health Board. The Board advises the County on mental health and substance use services, reviews programs and policies, promotes community involvement, and provides recommendations to improve the local behavioral health system.

Help Shape the Future of Early Childhood Education in Contra Costa County
The Contra Costa County Local Planning Council (LPC) is seeking passionate and community-minded individuals to serve on its Board and help guide policies and programs that support young children and families throughout the county.
The LPC plays a vital role in advising on early care and education needs, funding priorities, and strategies to strengthen services for families. Current openings include Public Agency, Child Care Provider, and Discretionary Appointee seats in various regions of the county. Individuals who live or work in Contra Costa County are encouraged to apply and bring their unique perspectives to this important work.
Membership terms are three years and appointments are made jointly by the Board of Supervisors and the County Superintendent of Schools.
