WHY I SAID NO TO CHICK-FIL-A

Yesterday morning the Tribune first reported that I was denying Chick-fil-A the necessary support to open a location on Elston. Today, they finally published my guest editorial, which I gave to them earlier this week.

I spent hours explaining my position to reporters yesterday, including ABC national and Chicago Tonight. Over the last 24 hours, my staff and I have been inundated with calls from all over the country from people who believe in "traditional marriage."

In every meeting I had with Chick-fil-A people over the last 9 months they told me they didn't support anti-gay causes. Last week, the comments from the CEO of the company made it clear that they were lying to my face in every one of those meetings. Also, there were issues with increased traffic congestion, which were never resolved.

I'm a staunch believer in equality. I will not support a business that discriminates against a minority population. I believe the majority of 1st Warders agree with this opinion. I'm tired of self-professed "liberals," who have no backbone and are all talk. Denying Chick-fil-A is taking a stand for what is right.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL HEALTH FAIR -- TOMORROW

The big day has nearly arrived.

Tomorrow, July 27, we intend to give away over 2,000 backpacks stuffed with all the supplies children need to excel and be excited about education.

Join us at the shared campus of Mirta Ramirez and Moos schools, 1711 N. California Avenue, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Your child must be present.
GRAFFITI REMOVAL DAY OF ACTION

Please consider volunteering with my office and your neighbors this Saturday when we'll be removing graffiti from our neighborhood.

If you can help just meet us at 10 a.m. at Chicago and Damen and we'll remove graffiti until around 12:30 p.m. Cleo's, at 1935 W. Chicago Avenue, has generously offered free pizza and soda for all our volunteers.
