Dear Northwest Christian family,

Arizona: Open for Learning. Within a press conference on Thursday, July 23rd , Governor Doug Ducey initiated the roll-out of the "Arizona: Open for Learning" plan . Within the plan, the beginnings of a path were set forth in which schools have the ability to open for on-campus, in-person instruction beginning on Monday, August 17th. Having had personal conversations with the Governor as well as Dr. Cara Christ of the Arizona Department of Health Services, having reviewed some of the plan's components ( and here ) which have already been published, and looking forward to more information that the state will release between now and August 7th, we now recognize that the Northwest Christian "Campus Readiness Plan" which was originally published on July 3rd, will, of necessity, need to see some level of revision. Those revisions will take place during the upcoming week and will be published within the August 2nd edition of the Week-at-a-Glance. In order to give our families time to review these revisions, we are moving back the NCS Plus commitment date to Saturday, August 8th. By that date, we would ask our families to determine if their students intend to start the year on Monday, August 17th on-the-ground or virtually within NCS Plus.

School Calendar Revisions. Please be aware that, because the start-of-school has been pushed back eight school days to Monday, August 17th, the dates on the calendars that were distributed within the "What's Next?" information that was emailed and mailed to your home earlier this summer are incorrect. A revised calendar including will be published as soon as possible. Until then, p lease be aware that the half-day previously scheduled for Friday, August 21st is now a full-day. As well, the July 31st date for registration day for middle and high school students is being rescheduled.

NCS On-Campus or NCS Plus... the choice is yours! Right now, Northwest Christian School teachers and technology support staff across all grades and divisions of the school are working very hard to prepare NCS Plus as a virtual enhancement of their on-the-ground classrooms. NCS Plus is not a temporary band-aid for use during a season of Covid-19 risk. Rather, it is a perpetual learning management system that will support the "flipped classroom" style of instruction for any and all students that are absent or simply wish to reinforce what they are learning on-the-ground. It will also serve as the vehicle by which students can start the school year at home if such is preferred by our families. Based on questions that we have collected from our families, we have updated our NCS Plus FAQs here . If your family intends to start the school year virtually using NCS Plus on August 17th, please email your intentions to NCSPlus@ncsaz.org by Saturday, August 8th. If we do not receive notification of such an intent by that date, the school will conclude that your family will return to campus for in-person instruction on August 17th. Please keep in mind that each student's participation within NCS Plus will need to be approved by a school principal who will personally notify the family of approval for the exception.

Updated Survey. Though we surveyed families in June as part of the formation of the Northwest Christian Campus Readiness Plan, we recognize that with each passing day, the Covid adventure seems to bring new information. Today, given all that has happened between our last survey and now, as well as the publication of the Campus Readiness Plan on July 5th, we would appreciate additional feedback from our families. The following link will take you to a brief, anonymous, and updated survey which will allow you to help inform pending school decisions. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey!

Changes within the Europe trip for Band/Choir/French Students. Unfortunately, for reasons related to Covid-19, the destination for this trip is changing. We look forward to providing additional information as soon as possible but the trip destination is changing to Hawaii and is now scheduled for March 11-17, 2021. The central focus of the trip will be a choir festival scheduled for Saturday, March 13th, 2021 on Oahu. We are working to reschedule the Europe trip to the 2022/2023 school year.

Information from the School Nurse. We are excited to welcome our new School Nurse, Anna Johnson R.N. , to the Crusader family. Please be aware of several requests from the Student Health Office:
  • In light of risks associated with Covid-19, the NCS Student Health procedures summary has seen some revisions. The updated summary is available here.
  • All students are required to have an updated Emergency Form and current copy of up-to-date immunizations in order to start school. If you are a returning student, you would have already filled out an updated emergency form as part of the re-enrollment process. If you are a new student, you will need to turn in a completed emergency form if you have not already done so. The Emergency Form is available here.
  • If you have previously turned in a "Religious Beliefs Exemption Form" in replacement of immunization records, it needs to be replaced with a "Personal Exemption Form" prior to starting school. You can print that form here.
  • All students with EpiPens must have a Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan Form filled out and signed by a doctor. This form must be on file in the health office along with the EpiPen prior to starting school.  You can download that form here.
  • If you would like your student to have daily or afternoon medications given, an unopened small bottle of the medication along with the med form needs to be dropped off to the health office. Please ensure the medication will not expire during the school year. The health office will be open August 11-13 from 8:00am to 3:00pm if you would like to drop off any medications in advance or want to discuss health issues regarding your student. Medications will be accepted any time during the school year. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email Nurse Johnson. The med forms (Part A and B) are available here
  • These forms need to be turned in to the front desk, mailed to the school, or emailed to the health office by August 3rd. You can email Mrs. Johnson at anjohnson@ncsaz.org.

KEEP IN MIND

As you review the summer opportunities below, please keep the following in mind:

  • Every event is designed from a safety-first perspective. Dates, number of spots available for participants, and locations--all of these details have been designed to comply with the latest health and safety guidance that we have received as a school. For the month of July, this means that, in accordance with the Governor's June 29th Executive Order, on-campus events will have limited capacity.
  • For the balance of July, based on state mandates, we will be requesting face coverings on campus in situations where social distancing is not possible. This does not apply to athletic events that are outdoors.
  • Every event is optional. There is nothing below that requires participation or that will impact a student's grades. If students participate, we want families to feel completely comfortable with their decision.
  • Subject to change. We have worked to provide as much up-to-date information as possible. But, as has been the case throughout this Covid-19 adventure, things are constantly changing and we must be patient enough to recognize as a community that we need to be continuously prepared to responsibly adapt in the interest of community safety. It is for this reason that the school reserves the right to change, reschedule, or cancel any event below. If an event does change, it will be highlighted in purple.
  • Attendance for certain events is limited. Using the links that you will find within this email, students and families can begin registering for these events on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Cancellations. If you sign-up for an event and later decide to cancel for reason of health and safety, there will be no issue. However, in the interest of managed group sizes, please do not show up for an event for which you are not already registered.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or the individual designated within the sections below.
