Residents and families are invited to gather as a community in recognition of Emancipation Day.
The Town of Oakville and the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) are hosting the annual Emancipation Day Picnic at the grounds of the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate on August 5, 2023 from 1 to 4 p.m. (rain date August 6).
“Emancipation Day serves as a reminder of how our town participated in the Underground Railroad, as well as an opportunity to recommit annually to promoting more diversity, inclusion, and equity.” - Mayor Rob Burton

Ontario Big City Mayors Caucus has issued a statement addressing a lacking of municipal capacity in supporting newcomers to Canada.
The statement states that Ontario’s Big City Mayors (OBCM) is calling for an urgent meeting of all orders of government to discuss immediate action on the capacity issues faced by our municipalities, and to put in place a funding model that addresses the on-going need for emergency housing and other supports as this refugee crisis continues.
Additionally, OBCM is also calling on the federal government to consult with municipalities, provinces and territories on the process of setting of immigration targets, including for international students, and on the funding and supports cities require to ensure people receive the housing and other services they need when they arrive.

FCM applying for intervener status for matter between Halton municipalities and CN | |

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is applying for intervener status in the Halton Municipalities’ Ontario Court of Appeal matter with CN.
On August 10, 2022, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice released its decision in a case between the Halton Municipalities and Conservation Halton (the “Halton Municipalities”) and CN related to CN’s proposed Intermodal facility in Milton.
The Halton Municipalities had commenced the application to protect the thousands of residents that live near the CN lands in Milton from adverse and harmful effects that would arise from CN’s proposed intermodal hub.

Oakville Family Ribfest This Weekend | |

The excitement builds as the weekend comes closer and the annual Oakville Family Ribfest kicks off at the beautiful Sheridan College campus on Trafalgar Road.
The Ribfest is a charity fundraising event organized by Rotary Oakville Trafalgar, Lions Club of Oakville and the Knights of Columbus. This year admission is $5 per person with children 8 and under being admitted for free. All proceeds from the event go to charities supported by the three service clubs.

Nearly all cities in Ontario must dramatically pick up the pace if they hope to hit the targets set by Premier Doug Ford's government, the latest housing construction figures show.
A year and half ago, Ford's Progressive Conservatives set the goal of 1.5 million new homes to be built in Ontario over the course of a decade, and laid down specific housing targets for 29 of the province's largest and fastest-growing municipalities to hit by 2031.
Now trends are emerging, with some cities faring far better than others at being on track to achieve their benchmarks for getting new homes built.
Comparing Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
(CMHC) statistics on new home construction starts from January 2022 to June 2023 against the province's 10-year targets for each city provides a measure of how close each city is to its needed pace.

Ontario Begins Audit of Municipal Finances
Ontario has selected a third party to audit the finances of six municipalities as part of its ongoing work to build 1.5 million homes by 2031.
Following a competitive procurement process, Ernst & Young LLP has been retained to examine the finances of the City of Toronto, Peel Region, Mississauga, Caledon, Brampton, and Newmarket. The first phase of the audits is expected to conclude around the end of 2023.
