Forgetfulness
“How much longer will you forget me, Lord? Forever? How much longer will you hide yourself from me? How long must I endure trouble? How long will sorrow fill my heart day and night? How long will my enemies triumph over me? (Psalm 13:1,2)
Forgetfulness! I sometimes think that this has become my area of expertise. I get my exercise retracing my steps in hopes of discovering “Why did I come in here in the first place?” I’ve searched high and low for my car keys, only to find them in my hand! When I was teaching, I lived in fear that some day I’d be working contentedly in my office and forget to go teach a class. Since it appears that this trait is not going away, I’ve achieved some measure of acceptance. I am forgetful – after all, that’s why God made planners, phone calendars, and Post-It notes.
In Psalm 13, it may be somewhat surprising to us to read that David, whom we picture as one of the strong, faithful, Godly Old Testament characters, feared that God had forgotten him. It may be all right for me to be forgetful, but God? Does our God have occasional “senior moments?” Of course not. While it may be natural for us to attribute human characteristics, both virtuous traits and less worthy ones, to God, ultimately we know, as David knew, that God has not forgotten us. May we continue to trust in God’s unfailing love.
Oh Holy, Faithful God,
Like David, we have our “down” days. We pray for forgetfulness: help us forget our sorrows, our troubles, our own day-to-day disappointments. But let us never forget the source of our hope, for we trust that You never forget us. We praise You for Your faithfulness. Amen
