Sergio Romo -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

I met former San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo at a Christmas toy drive in San Jose. I brought in and donated a toy and in exchange Sergio would sign an autograph and take a photo with you. He signed my baseball and was genuinely happy to meet all the fans that showed up at his event. He’s one of the nicest athletes I’ve met.

Letters to the Editor

Appreciative

Thanks for the sports journal and Go Giants! The A’s must be desperate and I feel so bad about them. On a happy note, I thought you might enjoy seeing this video sent by one of my French cousins. My husband and I were patrons of the Monterey Bay Aquarium for many years and please enjoy when you need to take a break from sports news.

Oakland A's -- A Zero on the Mound

Yankee's Domingo German enters MLB history with a perfect game

A Big Zero

in Oaktown

by Dave Newhouse

As Domingo German was nearing perfection on a balmy summer evening in Oakland, his uniform number was becoming increasingly prophetic with each historic pitch. A zero.

Such a strange number for a pitcher, a zero, yet the perfect summation of a perfect game — zero base hits, zero runs scored, zero runners on base. Twenty-seven Oakland batters came to the plate, and all 27 were retired on just 99 pitches, including nine strikeouts, in a New York Yankees’ 11-0 romp.

But that now luminous zero worn by the pinstripers' previously unheralded right-hander took on even greater symbolism upon further review.

The A’s opportunity this major-league season: A zero.

Oakland’s fading hopes of retaining the A’s: A bigger zero.

A’s owner John Fisher: One humongous fat zero.

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 capsulized perfectly — there’s that word again — the zero that Oakland’s baseball franchise, and Oakland’s once great athletic image, is dwindling down to: The saddest situation imaginable in American sports.

As if it wasn’t enough for Oakland to be the country's most abandoned sports city, and to now have the worst team in baseball combined with the worst home attendance, to then have a perfect game shoved down its throat is the worst punishment conceivable.

Fisher, the owner from hell, has deliberately dismantled a once proud franchise with no regrets, by getting rid of superb talent and replacing it with Triple-A calibre players, and then, cruelly, raising ticket prices to let loyal fans know what he truly thinks of them: A zero.

German’s perfect game was a drowning moment for an Oakland team that once ruled the baseball world, but has perfectly — can’t escape that word — been disgraced, and soon-to-be displaced, by an owner whose heart can be found in his wallet.

While watching German on television deflate the A’s with a wicked curveball, I couldn’t take my eyes off that dark blue 0 on the back of his Yankees' gray jersey, and what that number represented not only on the pitching mound, but throughout the Coliseum itself, and all across the City of Oakland.

There have been three perfect games in Oakland, German’s following A’s pitchers Catfish Hunter and Dallas Braden, who was behind the TV mike as A’s color analyst, describing German’s masterpiece with impressive objectivity.

Only three Yankees — Don Larsen, David Wells, David Cone — had ever thrown perfect games before German joined them, even while experiencing long dugout sequences as the A’s juggled pitchers. Amazingly, German had just two three-ball counts in becoming the second Dominican-born pitcher to throw a perfect game, following Seattle’s Felix Hernandez against Tampa Bay in 2012.

So where do the A’s go from here? Not yet to Las Vegas, but projecting a record number of big-league losses this season, a cruel blow to a clearly over-their-heads roster that courageously gives it all despite the huge odds stacked against it.

It’s unimaginable, even brutal, to envision the A’s being forced to play in Oakland in 2024, and that A’s fans will have to watch them one more depressing season, knowing full well that John Fisher did this evil thing to them, and to an entire city, and yet he will be rewarded financially once the A’s shift to Las Vegas.

There have been 24 perfect games in major-league history. A’s fans, and Oakland in general, can take some solace in knowing that Fisher also has attained perfection. He’s a perfectly awful owner.

Oakland A's

the A’s. (File photo: Las Vegas Review Journal)

Memories of Oakland, 1988 — No. 5 in a Series

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

OAKLAND, 1988 was the best-ever season at Oakland that did not produce a World Series title. The Athletics ended the regular season with a 104-58 .642 record, their best (and to date) since their first season at Oakland in 1968.

Cuban-born slugger José Canseco unanimously won the American League Most Valuable Player, becoming the first ever to steal 40 bases and hit over 40 home runs (42 home runs and 40 stolen bases), hit for .307 average, and also drove a major league-leading 124 runs. José Canseco was born in Regla, a small fishing town on the other side of Havana harbor.

He came to the United States very young and his Spanish (when I first spoke with him) was not good or clear, but he understood more than he spoke and has learned since. He was much more tuned in to the American culture than Cuban. During one of my interviews, we spoke about other things aside from baseball; he told me his favorite musical group was Foreigner, a popular American-British rock band.

After he won the Rookie of the Year in 1986, I covered him at the Houston Astrodome for the All-Star Game. I met and spoke to his late father, Jose Canseco Sr., a sales executive in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, for AMOCO Oil Company. As most fathers are, he was a proud papa.

The 1988 World Series matched the AL Champion A’s against the NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers beat the New York Mets in seven games during the NLCS to advance to the Fall Classic. Tommy LaSorda’s team won 94 games during the regular season, but in this World Series, the Oakland A’s were heavy favorites.

One of the many reporters who came to California to cover this series was Manolo Alvarez of WQBA radio in Miami; he was doing interviews, and he asked me if the A’s would sweep the series, I told him that was impossible to predict. However, such was the national sports media concept of the A’s as a much more superior team of that of the Dodgers.

The 1988 World Series began at Dodger Stadium, but Game No. 1 was the most memorable. The A’s took the lead in the second inning with a blast by José Canseco to straight-away center field, which hit one of the NBC cameras for a home run; it looked like the A’s, with their ace Dave Stewart on the mound, could do no wrong. Stew pitched eight complete innings and allowed three runs. But the whole story of this classic was settled in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Manager Tony La Russa brought in Dennis Eckersley to close the game, but a pinch-hit home run by Kirk Gibson, who could not start the game because of injuries, provided for one of the most improbable and iconic moments in World Series history, as Eck threw one slider after another, and at the end, one landed in the right field seats for a walk-off home run and a come-from-behind, thrilling victory by the underdog Dodgers by 5-4.

We were talking how ‘lay back’ are Dodger fans, but after than Gibson home run it felt like Dodger Stadium went 1,000 feet up in the air. This World Series went five games and the Dodgers won it, one of the big upsets in the history of the World Series. Oral Hershiser won two games and was declared the MVP.

For Game No. 3 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Mark McGwire hit a walk-off home run off reliever Jay Howell and won 2-1. It was the only game won by the A’s during the Series.

1988 was the first year of the three consecutive trips to the Fall Classic for Tony La Russa’s Athletics; they would have to wait for next year and during an Earthquake to beat, via a sweep, their Bay Area rival, San Francisco Giants in 1989.

Unfortunately for A’s fans, Kirk Gibson is a name that will live in infamy. Gibson is to A’s fans what the Yankees Bucky Dent is to Red Sox fans.

While the A’s still have five years before playing in their new ballpark in Las Vegas, which they hope to inaugurate for the 2028 season, José Canseco beat them to Las Vegas. For a few years now, José owns and runs the Showtime Car Wash and Mini-Mart a couple of blocks from the strip in Sin City. Sometimes he is there to sign autographs and to meet with fans. Losers!

Although it could be close, I don't think the Oakland A's or Kansas City Royals will be any worse than the 1899 Cleveland Spiders who had a 20 win, 134 loss season.

If the A's and Royals maintain their current pace, they won't even match the 1962 Mets season of 40 wins, 120 losses. One season is one thing, but consistency is a better measure.

Which team set a Major League record for finishing in last place in seven consecutive seasons?

Multiple choice again: Saint Louis Browns, Boston Braves, Philadelphia Athletics, or Tampa Bay Devil Rays?

Answer below.

Sports Precis

When did News become "What if" instead of "What is?"

by Howard Pearlstein

News – especially sports news -- used to be writing about what is happening, what has happened. Now it’s,“Oh dear, what if Draymond doesn’t want to stay with the Dubs?” “What if Chris Paul doesn’t play nice?” “What if Jordan Poole, becomes the superstar for the Wizards?”

To paraphrase French romantic Francois Villon: “Where are the facts of yesteryear?”

Or less lyrically and more often used around the poker table: “What if I had gotten that King?" “Yeah and what if a frog had wings? He wouldn’t bump his ass when he jumped. But he doesn’t, so he does.”

“What if” was something old friend and sci-fi writer, the late Dick Lupoff and I used to do. Wasn’t a formal thing, just started one evening at Brennan’s in Berkeley -- sadly, now closed -- when Dick looked up from his Irish Coffee and said: “What if the gunman had killed Jackie instead of JFK?” Makes for news in an alternative universe.

I think the silliest “what if” in the current news is “What if Draymond won’t play with Chris Paul?” dredging up a comment he made a few years ago, in an interview: “I don’t like CP at all,” and “We don’t have a good relationship at all.” Well, yeah, when the only time you ever see the guy, he’s destroying your game plan, blocking passes and all that jazz. So, duh.

Here’s an answer to that actual situation: The only Penn State tradition I’ve maintained all the years since, is to watch the games on TV every Saturday. And the one NCAA player I despised – as did pretty much most of the Nittany Lions -- was Nick Bosa. His presence for Ohio State said: “You think you’re going to a big bowl game this year? Gotta go through me.” He didn’t have to say it – he WAS it. And just like every other team in the conference, we couldn’t go through Nick Bosa.

But when the Niners drafted him, my happy D-fence mind went all the way back to Ronnie Lott and Patrick Willis. And more than a few of the 9ers Defense were players who came up against him in college and met him the hard way – and they were D-lighted to work with him.

Doubters.

One doubter asked what if Chris Paul is injured again, ends up like Andre Iguodala on the bench. Meaning he doesn’t have a clue to how Andre coached those players on defense. I recall an announcer who oohed and ahhed over a flashy blocked shot as, “Pure Iguodala.” Just coincidence that the Dubs’ killer defense showed up around then, after Andre came back?

There’s been talk that some of what Chris Paul might do is lead the bench – on the court with them getting the minutes they need to grow into their potential. It will be fun to watch Kuminga develop the greatness he seems able to become, and do it as one of the Dubs.

I understand the "What if" feeling. I always used to wonder what some place or party was going to be like before going there. My wife used to chide me for that.

But come on – these “what if’s” are always predicting doom, failure, loss, destruction, disappointment, disaster, and all other possible disses.

Don’t these guys have any good trips?

I haven’t seen any of the, like how about: “What if the changes work and we get something like the Return of the Death Lineup and we win out all the way through the finals?”

What about that one? Because that’s one the Dubs actually know how to do.

* * *

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.

An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Oakland Roots SC 0

Cal State University East Bay, Pioneer Stadium

Hayward, Saturday, June 28

Roots Fall to Rio Grande Valley FC Toros 2-0

Oakland Roots played a strong first half, but failed to find a goal on Wednesday night in the East Bay as Roots fell to the visiting Rio Grande Valley FC Toros 2-0.

Oakland dominated possession time early in the match, looking to remain patient as they moved the ball around the field waiting for cracks in the Toros defense to appear.

This patience led to a few early scoring chances for Roots, and minimized Rio Grande Valley’s touches in the first half. Counter to Roots, the Toros opted for an aggressive game plan, attempting to push the ball up the field quickly whenever they gained possession.

SJSU Tallies Highest LEARFIELD Directors'

Cup Finish in 27 Years

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Behind baseball and women's soccer Mountain West championships, women's golf earning a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships and Emilia Sjostrand becoming the first women's track and field athlete to garner NCAA Indoor All-American honors, San José State recorded its highest finish in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings in nearly 30 years with 176.30 points to finish 100th. That performance ranks second all-time, behind a 71st-place finish in 1995-96 (184.50 points).

"It's been one of the greatest years in athletics' history, and that is reflected in the latest LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "These standings do not factor in the postseason appearances by men's basketball and softball, as well as championship game appearances by men's soccer and women's volleyball. XCTK | Dreher to be Honored at ESPYS with Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award

MORAGA, Calif. – Although collegiate athletics are officially over until the fall, the Gaels are still finding ways to make headlines and do Saint Mary's proud. This is the case for junior runner Molly Dreher, who will be recognized at the upcoming ESPYS as an honorable mention honoree for the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award.

The award celebrates and honors young people who are using the power of sport as a catalyst for change and making a positive impact on society.

"It's pretty exciting. Advocacy work can be tough because you all to be self-motivated and it's on your own dime, but to be recognized and to see myself amongst a bunch of amazing people is pretty motivating," Dreher said. A visit to Frankfurt started the day with a tour followed by some free time to shop and get lunch.

Then it was off to the field for the final game of the trip. The Broncos and TSG Hoffenheim played to a 1-1 draw. Santa Clara's goal came on a rocket from Emma Bissell from 25-plus yards out that put the Broncos on top. Hoffenheim scored later in the second half.

Final game of the trip is in the books.

If you’ve ever walked into local restaurants Baja Cantina in Carmel Valley or Turn 12 in Monterey, it would be impossible to miss the fandom for all things motorsports. JUNIORS JOURNEY TO THE MYSTERIOUS EAST (COAST)

Photo essay by S/C Kimball Livingston

It was the junior team’s last day of practice before travel and the sun (remember that stuff?) came out and the westerly was mild and it was good. A few days later the fog was back but the boat trailer was already loaded for Coach Mike’s long haul to Chicago and the first ambitious junior team expedition beyond local waters since 2019. Sailors will begin flying out on July 4 to meet their boats for the C420 Nationals, the first rodeo on the trail. Nationals racing is limited to 140 boats, with 138 entered for races July 7-9. StFYC will have a couple days of practice ahead of race one, to get used to Lake Michigan. For our kids, this will be a first experience of big-fleet sailing. It’s not like this . . .

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff

Philadelphia Athletics

The Philadelphia Athletics, under the management of Connie Mack, finished in last place from 1915-1921. Their streak began right after appearing in four World Series in

five seasons.

The Devil Rays came close, but finished next to last in 2004, stopping their streak at six. If not for Tampa Bay's 2004 season, they would have finished last in

10 consecutive seasons.

Across town from the Philadelphia Athletics, the NL Phillies set a National League record of five last-place finishes from 1938-1942. Even during this dismal A's season, things could be worse! https://bit.ly/3Nv6uVo is proof of that...

I won't give up the source of this week's question because there are a bunch of questions I'm going to use...

More than a cookbook, this culinary delight was written to preserve a great chef's traditional family recipes and stories of her childhood for her far-flung grandchildren. Author Leonie Samuel-Hool recounts stories of a vanished society and legends of the gods and goddesses that protect and sometimes make mischief in Indonesian homes, fields and foods. The recipes are explicitly presented.

The absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
