As we approach July 4th, a day for profound reflection on our nation's foundational ideals, AIA Los Angeles reaffirms that democracy is not a static inheritance but a vibrant, continually constructed endeavor. It thrives in our shared spaces, in the dignity we extend to every individual, and in the unwavering belief that this nation is home to all who choose to build their lives here. We honor the courage of those who come here seeking safety and opportunity, and we reject the fear and division sown by aggressive immigration enforcement tactics currently unfolding in our neighborhoods.
These actions violate the principles of justice and equity. They make our streets feel less safe, our public spaces less open, and our communities more isolated. No one should be afraid to walk their child to school, seek care, or gather in the public realm. Civil rights are not optional. They are foundational. When people are afraid to gather, to work, or to move freely in public, the social fabric of the city we all share suffers. These operations chill community participation and impair access to essential services, education, and housing.
Immigrants help build Los Angeles: its buildings, its businesses, its culture, and are our clients, our collaborators, our neighbors, and our family. When we target anyone, we tear at the fabric of the city upon which we all depend.
We are committed to shaping places that welcome, protect, and uplift every person. We believe that the true strength of Los Angeles lies in its diversity, and that the future of our city depends on our ability to design for inclusion, not exclusion. We believe in the dignity of all people, the right to safely inhabit shared space, and the fundamental role of the built environment in supporting human rights. Cities that uphold these values are more likely to be prosperous, livable, and inclusive.
Let us use this day not only to celebrate freedom, but to stand together in defense of it. A more just and vibrant city is possible, and it begins with how we care for one another.
