July 4th Firework Safety

The Town of St. James wants all residents and their guests to have a happy and safe July 4th celebration. For most of us that means cookouts, parades, and fireworks.

The following provides information on what fireworks can be used in North Carolina and how to safely use them:

Fireworks that are legal in NC:

Fountains, smoke devices, snappers, glowworms, sparklers, poppers, snakes and novelty items that do not explode, fly, spin or leave the ground.

Fireworks that are illegal in NC:

Roman candles, firecrackers, bottle rockets, aerial fireworks and all fireworks which explode or are projected into the air.

Safety tips:

Buy fireworks from a reputable vendor; do not alter fireworks; do not attempt to reignite "dud" fireworks; store fireworks in a cool, dry place; use fireworks in an open and preferably paved area; keep a hose or bucket of water close at hand in case of fire; do not point fireworks at property or people; do not aim fireworks at trees, bushes, dry vegetation or any combustible material; only adults should handle fireworks; nearby children should be closely supervised; do not use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.
