RLA Summer Concert Series Kickoff
Next concert: July 28th featuring Krooked Fingerz
On Sunday, Rancho Los Alamitos hosted the first of three summer concerts. The featured artist was the legendary SoCal blues guitarist, Kid Ramos. It was a great concert that was enjoyed by a capacity crowd. If you’ve never been to a RLA summer concert, you’ll have two more chances on 7/28 and 8/25. From the stage, Kid Ramos said what we hear from so many first-time RLA visitors: “This is a beautiful setting. I’ve never been here before, and I’d love to come back.”

Municipal Band Concert at Whaley Park
The Municipal Band’s patriotic themed concert drew a huge crowd Tuesday night for Whaley Park’s final LBMB concert of the season. Tonight, we’ll be back at El Dorado Park to continue the season with five more LBMB concerts. We handed out American flags prior to the concert, and the crowd waved them and kept time with the music. The crowd also showed a great appreciation for the City’s rich US Navy history, and that includes two former naval hospital sites in CD4. Check out their enthusiasm for “Anchors Aweigh” in the attached video.

Long Beach Modified Tree Trimming Grid
To address schedule delays to the Long Beach City tree trimming grid, the Public Services Bureau of Long Beach Public Works has updated the tree grid to better align with the current Council Districts. The former tree grid, established over 25 years ago, was originally aligned with the Council Districts based on the 1990 census. Over the years, this grid has evolved into a tree maintenance program that has experienced delays due to resources being diverted to address “out of cycle” tree trimming requests, resulting in a 12-month delay in the scheduled trimming work for FY 23-24. Read the memo at this link and view the interactive grid map here.

Two Former Naval Hospital Sites in CD4
In our Whaley Park Muni Band concert item above, we referenced the fact there were two Naval Hospital sites in the current Council District 4. The original Naval Hospital Long Beach opened in 1942 at 5901 E. 7th Street. It closed in 1950 and ultimately became the current VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The land had been part of Rancho Los Alamitos that was purchased from the Bixby Family by the Navy in 1941. The second hospital opened in 1967 at Carson and the 605 Freeway where the Long Beach Towne Center is now located. Council District 4 is organizing an effort to erect a plaque or monument at the Towne Center to recognize the former Naval Hospital site. We’ll have more details in an upcoming newsletter.
