FCC Hot Springs puts Disciples Mission Fund dollars to work!

Have you ever noticed that the Spirit of God often shows up at the most unique times? Last Wednesday, I asked Kristen Beach to help me come up with some creative ways to tell the stories of Disciples Mission Fund (DMF) dollars at work! It wasn’t something that we needed to do “right then”, but I wanted to plant the seed so that we could come back to it following General Assembly! But something happened later that night…a message from Ronny Nowell: “Just wanted to be sure you saw this. Might be a good Currents article.” It seems that the Holy Spirit didn’t want to wait until after General Assembly!  😉

With his permission, we are sharing the following article from Rev. Corey Harrison which speaks to the importance and vitality of Disciples Mission Fund. Lives are changed – forever – when we give to DMF! THANK YOU…GREAT RIVER REGION…for your ongoing support of the ministries of the wider church! We are the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)…the local church…the regional church…the general church…and the global church! Thanks be to God!

Article by Rev. Corey Harrison

Minister, FCC Hot Springs, AR

Our church in Hot Springs, Arkansas, started a Day Camp program this year aimed at promoting literacy and Social-Emotional Learning for kids in our community. We held it at our church building each Saturday morning in June.

Some background: the poverty rate for households with children in Hot Springs School District is 38% (which is nearly double the rate of AR as a whole). Our church building is right in the middle of the district and adjacent to several of the more under-resourced neighborhoods in town. Plus, we have multiple retired teachers and school librarians in our congregation—and anyone with an education background knows summer learning loss is a big deal.

Putting all these things together, it seemed obvious God was calling our church to extend a loving welcome to our neighbors through some sort of summer reading program. Thus, the concept for Day Camp began to take shape!

With a Mission and Ministry Grant from the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we were able to send each of our campers home with free, age appropriate books each week. We also provided all the kids with breakfast and lunch, and transportation for about half of them. (As an aside, only 1 of the 14 participating kids is a member of our church.)

This was a small venture, and not particularly groundbreaking or innovative, but it was one way for us to give back to our community and use our talents and resources to support kids and families. The new relationships we’ve built have already led to several productive conversations about how we can continue to be a resource to families.

We couldn’t have done this without the NBA Grant. If your church gives to Disciples Mission Fund, then, in a very real sense, we couldn’t have done this without you either! So thank you all for your commitment to our General Church, and to the cooperative ministries that make all our churches stronger.

In the kingdom of God, kids love to read!

Dear friends,

As you know, families in Texas are devastated following the historic flooding of Camp Mystic. Personally, I cannot possibly fathom the heartache and despair of the parents who have lost their children. I cannot comprehend the gut-wrenching feeling of awaiting the fate of those who have yet to be found. As of two hours ago, one counselor and 11 girls were still unaccounted for.

I trust that none of us need to be reminded of the power of prayer. May the following prayer offered by the Week of Compassion staff guide us as our hearts continue to surround this community with love.

“Author of Creation, whose Spirit hovered over the waters before all things were and who spoke each thing into being: we seek your presence as flooding in Texas has torn apart the land and upended lives. Into the swirling chaos of this moment, speak your words of peace over anxiousness, of comfort over sorrow, of companionship over isolation, of hope over despondency, and of possibility over desolation. Surround with your love those who are grieving and those who wait for news. Stir your Spirit in us, that we might know and embody your recreative power, which draws all things to your very self and your salvation. Amen.”

Rest assured that the Week of Compassion is in close communication with our Disciples of Christ pastors in the Southwest Region.

We will update you as needs become clearer as to how we in the GRR might best assist our Disciples family in the Southwest.

May the holy breath of God fill those who mourn with peace which truly passes all understanding.

Praying God’s peace upon you all,

Alison
