Contra Costa Animal Services Seeking Adopters and Fosters Amidst Increased Intake Over 4th of July Holiday

All animals at Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) will be free to adopt during the month of July in an effort to clear kennel space due to increased intake over the 4th of July holiday. This free adoption promotion is being sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation as an effort to create needed space with the county shelter near capacity. CCAS is also seeking qualified foster homes – specifically those that can accommodate large dog breeds – to help alleviate the current shelter population.

“Coming out of the 4th of July holiday, we’ve seen a sixteen percent increase in our animal intake and we’re close to reaching our capacity,” says Dr. Katherine Mills, DVM, CCAS Chief of Shelter Medicine. “With an already crowded shelter and an average intake of nearly 20 animals each day, we’re asking for the community’s help in getting as many pets out of the shelter as we possibly can through adoption and foster.”

CCAS currently has over 100 pets seeking permanent or temporary homes. Interested adopters and fosters can view CCAS’s available pets at www.ccasd.org, or come to meet them at the CCAS adoption center in Martinez. A $25 licensing fee may apply for pet adoptions.

Family and Children's Trust (FACT) Committee

The Family and Children’s Trust Committee (FACT) was established in 1985 by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to make funding recommendations on the allocation of specific funds for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect and supportive services for families and children. Funding for FACT supported projects derived from federal and state program legislation, and donations to the County’s Family and Children’s Trust Fund.

Every three years, the members of the FACT Committee establish a series of county priorities for the use of these funds through review of existing data and reports and by holding Public Hearings in various areas of the county. The Committee then develops a competitive bidding process to select non-profit, community-based agencies that can best provide the services determined to be most important. Program recommendations are made to the Board of Supervisors which makes the final funding decisions. The Committee continues to evaluate these funded programs to ensure continued provision of quality service and achievement of stated goals.

Programs currently being supported include countywide parenting classes, therapeutic day care for emotionally disturbed children, treatment for families, young children and teens with both substance abuse and child abuse issues, services for homeless families, and projects to support children whose mothers have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Members of the FACT Committee include residents with expertise in children’s issues, education, law, non-profit agency management, public health, and program research/evaluation. Committee meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 9:30 AM in central Martinez.

For more information about the Family and Children’s Trust Committee, or to make donations to the tax-exempt Trust Fund, contact the FACT staff at (925) 608-4943.

2024 Fish & Wildlife Propagation Fund Grants Available

The Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee is now accepting applications from individuals and groups interested in enhancing the fish and wildlife resources of the County. Grant applications must be received by September 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

The Fish and Wildlife Committee strongly encourages applications related to public education, improving habitat, scientific research, threatened and endangered species, and resolving human/wildlife interaction issues. In addition, the Committee wishes to fund one or more projects that increase collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the court, and community cultural organizations on enforcement issues and education, focusing on communities that may be unaware of local fish and game laws. Projects that provide multilingual signage and educational materials are encouraged.

The Fish and Wildlife Committee awards grants for prospective expenditures to non‐profit organizations, schools, and government agencies. The Committee generally does not recommend funding for operating costs and overhead, such as benefits or utilities or ongoing staff support for an organization. Further, projects awarded monies from the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund must meet the requirements of Section 13103 of the Fish and Game Code.

Funding for the grant program is generated from fines for violations of the Fish and Game Code and Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors receives the Committee’s recommendations and holds final decision‐making authority over the awarding of grants.

During the 2023 grant cycle, a total of $71,045 was awarded to 10 projects. The awards ranged from $1,015 to $15,100.

Application materials may be obtained on the Fish and Wildlife Committee website or by contacting Maureen Parkes of the Contra Costa County Conservation and Development Department by phone at 925‐655‐2909 or by e‐mail at maureen.parkes@dcd.cccounty.us.
