Five Fun Facts about Father Burl
|
|
1) Fr. Burl is a musician. Studying music from fourth grade forward, he earned a bachelor's degree in organ performance and a certificate from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He has sung with choirs for most of his life, including with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under Robert Shaw’s direction, and was a pianist at Nordstrom in Crystal City during his earlier stint in the Washington area. He has broad tastes in music and loves everything from the Great American Songbook to R&B and shape-note singing. He's frequently playing music in his office and always has music going in his head.
2) Fr. Burl has lived throughout the southeastern United States. He comes to Falls Church from Palm Beach, Florida, but he taught at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia from 2002-2007, then moved to New Orleans, followed by Atlanta, and then Charlotte. Fr. Burl grew up on a farm in Mississippi, went to Millsaps College and Yale Divinity School, and was ordained to the diaconate and the priesthood in Atlanta while on faculty at The Lovett School.
3) Both Fr. Burl and Bob are genetic genealogists and have done significant work on their families. Bob is a voracious reader and has several novels, biographies, or histories going at the same time. Fr. Burl usually can’t sit still, so he is often in the kitchen or working in the garden or out for walks, especially in the leafy streets of Falls Church and near-by Arlington. Having lived in the area before, both Bob and Fr. Burl are excited about taking advantage of the cultural opportunities the metro area affords. They are both dedicated historic preservationists and love returning to the 1830s farmhouse in rural Georgia they are restoring when their schedule permits.
4) Fr. Burl and Bob have come to Falls Church accompanied by Blue, an occasionally affectionate ragdoll cat, who has been very vocal about the move north. Bob works from home, and Blue is an ill-suited amanuensis, but his company—nearby, rarely adjacent—is a welcome companion. He is happy following the sun from place-to-place that offers good vantage points to the world outside.
5) Fr. Burl believes in the inherent goodness of people and in the already-but-not-yet reality of the Kingdom of God, that promised reality when justice and equity rule, and pain and sorrow are no more, and he works daily for that reality in full faith that it is both coming and already here. He knows that love is the defining characteristic of the Kingdom and that, as Bishop Curry has said, “If it’s not about love, then it’s not about God.”

Hello TFCE Community! Plans are underway for summer events and the fall program year! Our Regathering Task Force along with our staff and vestry have worked tirelessly to ensure our spaces are safe and follow the latest CDC guidance and in some cases exceed those recommendations.
We would like to take this opportunity to understand how all of you are feeling about the return to in-person worship and activities. We have created a short five minute survey that we ask you to fill out so we can best serve everyone. Please respond to the survey here. We recognize that things may change over the course of the summer, but need early input so that we can plan for September! We'll probably ask you the same questions again later in the year. We want to have all responses in by July 13. Thank you!

The Little Free Food Pantry
On Fairfax Street near the church’s Thrift Shop is a small “take some food, leave some food” pantry (like the “little libraries” where people can take or leave a book). We are definitely seeing people use that pantry to supplement their groceries, and you can drop off non-perishable food items there at any time.
