What’s Been Going on Inside During COVID?
What’s God Doing About It?

A New Thing has Come My Way

God does answer prayers, even in here, and even in a pandemic. I have spent many years dealing with a health problem, going through the whole series of try this, try that phase, only to end up being told that my only options were to continue as I have been or have surgery.

I had brought this problem to God many times in prayer for Him to please help. This last time, I decided to be more specific. I said, “God, I really need you to provide a better option. Maybe You didn’t quite understand what I was asking for because I didn’t really name it.”

The next time I went to the doctor, they gave me more tests. The doctor came in with two interns (doctors in training) and we again discussed all the options that we’ve tried and what was left. It was the same old story.

Then, one of the interns asked if I’d heard of this other option. I was so surprised. This doctor in training had a new idea. We talked about it. The more I heard, the more I knew I wanted to try it. More importantly, I knew this new thing was God’s answer to my prayer!

I said yes, I’d like to try this new option. I didn’t want to go straight to surgery. I looked at the doctors and the two interns with a huge smile on my face and told them all that this was God’s answer to my prayer.

The procedure has a huge success rate, and they think I’m a good candidate to try this new thing. I’m so excited to try it. Even in this place, God hears us and does answer our prayers.

A Note from Pastor Terry
"God is on the Move"

When I first came to New Beginnings, there was no Inside Council. The Administration that was then in place in the prison did not allow it because it was thought that no inmate ought to hold a position that might lead them to think they had authority over others. It took years, and felt like we were moving mountains, but the Inside Council was eventually formed.

I remember thinking, aha, God is on the move. Part of that move included making room for the women of the Inside Council to lift up their voices in this ministry such that the ministry would reflect who they are and also connect them with the community outside. Hearing them share how they experience God in their lives is far preferable to our making assumptions on their behalf. We all learn in the process.

Also, when I first came to New Beginnings, we were a congregation that was actively involved in Prison Congregations of America. As such, we used PCA’s logo as our own. Remember the Kite Girl? She was great. But as New Beginnings developed more of its own identity and the women began to feel more encouraged to share their own ideas, they came up with a new logo.

The image was of a life-giving tree, strongly grounded and rooted, that invited ALL to be leveled in the eyes of God. The life-giving tree, as it emerged on paper, also arose as a cross. It is the cross/tree at which the women envision themselves also strongly grounded and rooted as they sit together at the foot. The irony is that the fear the former prison administration harbored for years never happened. The Inside Council never thought of themselves as having authority over others.

You will notice this week that there is a new logo. It resembles the old logo, but it is a new creation that reflects continued change. God is on the move. We continue in faith.

God bless you all.
