Seniors' Care Team Survey

The Seniors' Care Team (SCT) supports the care of patients aged 65+. These interdisciplinary teams work closely with emergency department physicians, nurses, patients and essential care partners, focusing on preventing unnecessary admissions and supporting older adults 65+ to return to the place they call home with the right support in place.

Nova Scotia Health has introduced Seniors’ Care Teams in the emergency departments at Dartmouth General, Cape Breton and Yarmouth Regional Hospitals and Colchester East Hants Health Centre. If you are located at any of these emergency departments and have engaged with the Seniors’ Care Teams, please tell us what is working and what could be improved by completing this two-minute survey. Your feedback will be used by the Frailty & Elder Care Network to evaluate the program and inform quality improvement.

If you have any questions about the survey or the Seniors’ Care Teams, please contact the Frailty and Elder Care Network at frailty@nshealth.ca.

Nova Scotia Health Ranks Among Canada's Best for Surgical Wait Times

For the second year in a row, Nova Scotia Health has been recognized as a leader in improving access to surgical care.

In the latest Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report, Nova Scotia ranked among the top three provinces in Canada for surgical wait time benchmark performance in four key categories:

  • 2nd for cataract surgeries
  • 2nd for hip replacements
  • 2nd for knee replacements
  • Tied for 3rd for hip fracture repairs

The results are part of a broader trend of improved access to care across the province.

  • In 2025-26, Nova Scotia Health completed scheduled surgeries for 59,091 patients — a 17 per cent increase over pre-COVID volumes and about 1,500 more surgeries than the previous year.
  • At the same time, the surgical waitlist fell to 16,280 patients, down more than 30 per cent from the start of the pandemic and nearing its lowest level since Nova Scotia Health was formed in 2015.
  • Diagnostic imaging services have also expanded significantly, with CT scans up 35 per cent and MRIs up 33 per cent compared to 2019-20.

These achievements reflect years of dedicated work by healthcare teams across the province to improve access to care and help more Nova Scotians receive the services they need, sooner.

Thank you to our surgical, diagnostic imaging and support teams whose commitment continues to make a difference for patients and families across Nova Scotia.

Publication Spotlight: A CanMEDS-Based Approach to Physician Evaluation and Performance Assessment

Nova Scotia Health is working to strengthen continuous professional development, leadership growth and patient care through a structured physician assessment framework grounded in CanMEDS roles and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Reconciliation and Accessibility (EDIRA) principles. The Principal Investigators of this study, physicians Dr. Michel Saccone, Dr. Bradley Ball and Dr. David Conrad, evaluated feedback tools to support voluntary, confidential and formative professional development across diverse practice settings.

This study was initiated as a project under Doctors Nova Scotia’s Physician Leadership Development Program (PLDP) and supported by NSH’s Medical Affairs. Congratulations to the team on their published study and great work to everyone who participated in this year's PLDP cohort.
