NPI (National Provider Identifier) is a unique federal identification number issued to covered health care providers—that includes massage therapists! Massage therapists are recognized as healthcare providers and are able to obtain NPI numbers from the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services).
Applying for an NPI is a simple step that all Illinois Massage Therapists can take to promote Massage Therapy as a healthcare profession. Applying for an NPI online is simple and only takes about 15 minutes.
Why apply for an NPI?
The NPI is your official identifier in health related transactions, including Veterans Affairs (VA), Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance plans when treatment is covered by a client’s insurance plan. This increasingly includes massage as more health plans are beginning to cover it as a treatment for various conditions from chronic pain to mental illness.
How to Apply
Simply log into the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and apply online.
You will be asked to select a taxonomy code when you apply for your NPI number. The taxonomy code for massage therapy is 225700000X.
