Team Updates - July 2023
Happy July!

I hope you are enjoying this more seasonable mix of heat and rain after some unpleasant smoke and a long dry spell! The Ag Team has some great events coming up this summer at CCE, including a meet-up hosted at Stone Bend Farm in Enfield (building from the excellent event hosted at South Hill Cider in the spring), and a series of field days focused on nut production and agroforestry later in the summer. See below for more details!

We are gearing up for the quadrennial Ag District Review process, which will focus on the western side of the county. Stay tuned for more on that. And there are a couple of conversations underway where farmer input and engagement would be most welcome:
  • a research program is getting underway focused on agrivoltaics (integrating solar with agriculture - e.g. grazing sheep, cutting hay between rows of panels, farming specialty crops underneath solar arrays)
  • a group of CCE staff are working on educational resources related to irrigation needs on farms across the state
If you are interested in getting involved in either of these conversations - either you want to learn more, or you have perspective to share - please reach out to Graham at gs695@cornell.edu.

Finally, note the opportunity below to apply for a Brighter Futures grant from American Farmland Trust. Awards of up to $10,000 are available, with a short turnaround - applications are due July 15!

Stay cool out there, and let us know what we can be doing to support you and your operation!

Due August 7: Applications for funding through NYS
Climate Resilient Farming program
The Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program helps farms reduce their operational impact on the environment and address the impacts of extreme weather events resulting from climate change. Round 7 will offer $15 million statewide, up from $8 million in the last round of the program, to help farmers implement agricultural projects and make related equipment purchases that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support soil health and improved water quality. This year’s program emphasizes precision feed management and agroforestry, two best management practices that are identified in the New York State Climate Action Council’s Scoping Plan as critical to helping increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gases on farm.

The Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District can apply now on behalf of farmers for these competitive grants. Contact Devin Cox at dcox@tompkins-co.org by July 15 to learn more and get the application process started. The application and additional information are also available on the Department of Ag and Markets website.
Being compiled: Tompkins County
custom operators list
Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and CCE Tompkins are collaborating to put together a list of individuals and organizations in Tompkins County who are interested in having their names included on an internal list of custom operators who are interested in contracting for custom fieldwork (e.g. lime spreading, drill seeding, tillage). To learn more or get your name on the list, contact Graham at gs695@cornell.edu or Paul at PGier@tompkins-co.org.

Squash Bugs Are Attracted to and Eat Each Other’s Poop to Stock Their Microbiome
Squash bugs, a common and difficult-to-control agricultural pest, need healthy bacteria in their gut to grow and stay alive. However, they do not acquire any bacteria from their parents when they are first born, leaving them vulnerable until their microbiome can be stocked. “These pests are very difficult to control, because they’re not exposed to conventional insecticides,” says Jason Chen, a graduate student in biology at Emory University and co-first author of a new paper on the subject. “But if you can target them at this vulnerable stage in the life cycle, that’s a really nice way to target a specific agricultural pest and nothing else in the ecosystem.”
