It's almost tomato truck season! Our visit is a little early this month to match the timing of the Tomato row crops at Rominger Brothers Ranch in Winters.
Art & Ag visited Rominger Brothers for the Almond Bloom back in 2022, and even earlier in the program’s history, 2009 (who has work from this visit?!). This time, we are heading there for tomato row crop heaven! A sprawling property in the foothills of the Coast Range that has been in the Rominger family for five generations.
During our visit we are being allowed access to THREE tomato fields nestled along the foothills in Winters. Tomato Field 1 runs along a canal & a safflower field that may be in bloom with orange buds. Down the road from the first field, Tomato Field 2 is closest to hills and is the ideal spot to start your visit. If you have time, take a short drive to check out Tomato Field 3 lined with walnuts, and crop rows that run north/south.
Our hosts and stewards of the land, Rick and Bruce Rominger, are committed to protecting the environment. In the last 20 years, they installed more than 7 miles of field-border hedgerows and riparian corridor enhancements with native plants including foothill pine, deer grass, bay tree, red bud. “We wanted to get a lot of diversity in the corridor" says Rick.
To further preserve their family legacy of farming the Rominger’s and Yolo Land Trust are currently working to complete a conservation easement on 479 acres of their farmland in Winters.
