Welcoming New Members to Your Association
|
Fall is the time when many women's bar groups begin their new membership year or gear up for a membership drive which coincides with the calendar year. It's a great time to focus on what you can do to make new members feel that they are truly a part your organization--not simply by providing a list of benefits--but by making those benefits a reality. Networking Opportunities It's not enough to say that there are networking opportunities. It's time to analyze how to make those opportunities accessible to all your members. How can you enhance the welcome for new and newer members at existing events? Do you need to add a few smaller, more informal events where everyone can be introduced? What kind of formal or informal mentoring programs do you have in place? What are the networking opportunities for those who can't attend in-person events? Can social media help keep your members connected? Leadership Opportunities Any women's bar leader will let you know that involvement in women's bar committees or boards is a great way to practice and enhance leadership skills. How hard is it for your members to figure out the path to leadership in your group? (Hint: saying that "We're looking for volunteers" is only part of it.) Are you identifying and mentoring new leadership? Are you making room for new members on committees each year? Don't be tempted to take the easy route of getting things done with the same experienced committee members every year lest you give the impression of being a closed "old girls' club." Educational Opportunities Are you providing the type of educational opportunities that your members need now, or are you simply repeating the formulas that have worked in the past? How nimble is your group in responding to new trends and challenges in law practice? What percentage of your membership participates in your educational programming? Is there a way of further disseminating the information through remote broadcasts, recordings or newsletter articles? Let your new members know what type of programs they can expect and how to give you feedback on topics they'd like to see covered in the future. For more information on welcoming new members, click here. Also, check out our membership resources pages for more ideas on membership, including lists of membership benefits and answers to the all-important question, "Why join a women's bar?" |
