There is Help – There is Hope
September marks National Suicide Prevention Month – a time to remember the lives lost to suicide and acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. It is also a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention and share messages of hope. United General District 304 offers trainings year-round that start important conversations around positive mental health and teach adults and youth how to support people experiencing mental health challenges and crises, including suicide.
| |
This September, there are many ways you can get involved:
| |
On August 28, community members from across Skagit will convene for a memorial walk and resource fair recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day. The event, organized by Skagit County Public Health, New Earth Recovery, and R.I.S.E Recovery, will be a time to remember without stigma those we have lost to overdose, support those in recovery, and reduce the impact of substance use together.
Join us on Wednesday, August 28, from 5-8 pm at the Skagit County Fairgrounds.

Everyone deserves to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. In the past few years, places and resources for youth who have had someone close to them die have been absent from our community. We are pleased to announce the launch of a new program to support youth in our community, Rooted: Grieving and Growing Together, formerly called The Landing. Rooted is a program for children, teens, and adults to be in community with each other and their grief.
Our Open House marks the official return of youth-focused grief supports in Skagit County. Whether you work with youth in the community or have lost someone close to you, we look forward to welcoming you into our newly remodeled space, introducing our friendly volunteers and staff, and providing information about grief resources, including a six-week program for families this fall.

Celebrating Breastfeeding Month
In August, United General District 304 WIC Nutrition Program staff celebrate Breastfeeding Month. Stop by our WIC clinic on the United General Hospital district campus and check out the lactation support services available to local families. | Our staff created a display of the various breast pump and milk storage options available free of charge for WIC participants. These support options especially help working parents to meet work-life balance. Pumping supports parents in balancing work responsibilities with their desire to provide breast milk, reducing stress and enabling a smoother transition back to work.
Evidence overwhelmingly shows that breastfeeding provides a powerful boost to an infant's immune system, helping lower the baby's risk of many common childhood infections and diseases.
Setting up a regular exercise routine is hard! Having an exercise partner or group of friends can help you stay fit and maintain social connections. Studies show the benefits and importance of social connections in staying active and physically fit through all stages of life. Being accountable to a friend can sometimes be that motivator that helps get you out on the trail or to a group fitness class at the gym. Knowing that someone is counting on you can help!
Read this article from the National Institutes of Health for more information on the many benefits of exercising with others.
Some tips to help maintain a regular exercise routine:
- Build your network – try a new class or group
- Make a shared routine – commit to exercise with a friend weekly
- Be accountable – share your goals with people you trust
- Join a team – Nature RX walks or a group fitness class
- Family – bring the grandkids or your pet along

Measuring Wellbeing – Take Part in the Regional Survey Today
Building Healthier Communities is our goal and commitment across the more than 50 programs offered at United General District 304. But how do we know if and when we’ve achieved a thriving, healthier community? Listening and learning how people see their current and future selves is one way to measure wellbeing, which is why we’ve joined the North Sound Accountable Community of Health (ACH) to develop a short survey available in English and Spanish. The survey helps us understand the levels of thriving, struggling, and suffering currently experienced by those in our community and make progress towards a better future.
We want to ensure voices from every corner of our region are included and invite you to join the effort to better understand our region’s wellbeing. Take the survey today and help spread the word to your neighbors, coworkers, and clients!
|
Did you know you can use your Fred Meyer card to help make our programs possible? Through Fred Meyer Community Rewards, you can link your card to Foundation of District 304.
