Heat Illness Prevention
Every year, dozens of workers die and thousands more become ill while working in extreme heat or humid conditions. There are a range of heat illnesses, and they can affect anyone, regardless of age or physical condition. The basic message to employees is PREVENTION, which comes down to three key words: Water. Rest. Shade.
As employers with workers exposed to high temperatures you should establish a complete heat illness prevention program. Heat-related illnesses are preventable which begins with understanding the causes of heat illness and making sure that employees stay cool and hydrated during hot weather. In addition, knowing the signs of heat injury and being able to treat it immediately will reduce the number of severe cases.
Heat illness is a serious medical condition that occurs when heat exposure exceeds the bodies capacity to cool itself. This results in an increase in the core body temperature that can produce a range of heat-related symptoms, from treatable heat cramps to heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal, especially if medical treatment is delayed. Supervisors and employees should learn how to recognize and respond to heat-related illness, train others to protect themselves and ultimately prevent heat-induced illness.
Some strategies in the prevention of heat related illnesses are to:
  • Provide workers with water, rest and shade!
  • Ensure there is plenty of water available to workers throughout the entire work shift.
  • Adjust work schedules to take advantage of the cooler periods in the early mornings.
  • Allow new or returning workers to gradually increase workloads and take more frequent breaks to acclimate and build a tolerance to working in the heat.
  • Train workers on the signs and symptoms of heat illness to watch out for each other.
  • Supervisors need to monitor workers for signs of illness throughout their shifts.
  • Plan for emergencies. Can your supervisors/employees contact 911 when needed?
Spending time with your employees and training them on prevention and response techniques is time well spent in order to save a life.
