The Authority Adopts the
FY2026-2031 Six Year Program!

The Authority unanimously adopted the FY2026-2031 Six Year Program (SYP) as recommended by the Planning and Programming Committee (PPC), committing $776 million toward 21 multimodal transportation projects across Northern Virginia. The FY2026-2031 SYP is NVTA's eighth funding program adopted and the second largest to date in terms of funding available.

Collaboration Across the Region

NVTA is proud to support our partners in improving Northern Virginia's transportation network. Together, we advocate for the region’s transportation needs and work to secure the resources necessary to advance vital projects.

The Authority receives endorsement requests from regional agencies and local jurisdictions in Northern Virginia. These agencies and jurisdictions pursue federal grants and programs to help fund their transportation projects. The Authority unanimously approved:

The Standard Project Agreement (SPA) for the City of Fairfax's Blenheim Boulevard Multimodal Improvements project. The project was adopted as part of the FY2020-2025 Six Year Program (SYP).

The recommendation to reallocate Regional Surface Transportation Program (RSTP) funds to fund a pedestrian footbridge at Cavalier Trail Park for the City of Falls Church.
The recommendation to reallocate Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) and RSTP funds for Virginia Railway Express (VRE) due to the completion of original projects.
The recommendation to reallocate RSTP funds for the Town of Leesburg to help close the identified funding gap for the Route 15/Battlefield Interchange project, in hopes of advancing the project toward construction.

The Authority unanimously approved a resolution supporting project applications from member jurisdictions and agencies for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s SMART SCALE Prioritization Process.

NVTA staff worked closely with jurisdictions and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to prepare a list of 35 SMART SCALE applications spanning multiple modes of transportation across Northern Virginia.

Additionally, the Authority unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Route 234 and Clover Hill Road Intersection Improvements project and authorizing NVTA CEO Monica Backmon to submit the project on behalf of NVTA to the SMART SCALE Prioritization Process.

The Commonwealth is expected to release project evaluations and funding recommendations in January 2027. It is anticipated that the Commonwealth Transportation Board will hold Public Hearings in Spring 2027 and will adopt the Six Year Improvement Program in June 2027.

Join us for an interactive Open House on July 23 to learn about Northern Virginia’s long range transportation plan, TransAction, and share your ideas for the future of transportation in Northern Virginia. This community event is an opportunity to provide feedback on what is working well today, discuss current transportation challenges with staff and help shape future regional transportation projects. The Open House will be held at NVTA’s office (2600 Park Tower Drive Suite 601, Vienna, VA 22180) from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. This is a drop-in style event, so come any time.
