MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We’re Turning up the Heat This July With Big Wins, Bold Plans, and a Little Boot-Scootin’ on the Horizon!

BOMA/GLA made its mark last week at the BOMA International Conference in Boston—and I was proud to be there to witness it.

Let’s kick things off with some well-deserved congratulations:

Finland Alejo (Kilroy Realty) was named Pacific Southwest Region Member of the Year – an amazing and well-earned recognition!
Christina Winstead (BluSky) has been elected to the BOMA International Executive Committee – we’re proud to have her representing us on the national stage.
And a big shout-out to the team at Kilroy Realty for taking home a BOMA International TOBY Award for The Sunset. What a fantastic win!

Also, thank you to all who attended and represented BOMA/GLA at our West Coast Mixer. It was a great opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the state.

As we turn our focus back to home, nominations are now open for our Awards of Excellence. Take a moment to recognize the rockstars in our industry – submit your nominations by August 1.

And if you manage or operate an exceptional building, consider entering our local TOBY Awards. The deadline is July 25, so get those entries in!

We’re also gearing up to host the BOMA International Conference right here in Long Beach next year! Huge thanks to our Local Host Committee Co-Chairs, Amy Martin (The Muller Company) and Finland Alejo, for leading the way. Interested in getting involved? Empowering Communities: BSP’s Summer Health and Resource Fair

This summer, Building Skills Partnership (BSP) hosted a health and community resource fair for LA property service workers and their families. With approximately 200 in attendance, the event provided a Kaiser Permanente mobile clinic with free health screenings, free food distribution, important resources, lunch, and entertainment. BSP is committed to bringing educational, health, and community resources to the people that need them the most.

How long has your company been a BOMA member?

We have been BOMA members for 14 months.

What’s your favorite part of being a BOMA/GLA member?

My favorite part is meeting new people and staying up to date on industry trends and changes.

What is your favorite BOMA/GLA event and why?

I can't pick just one, so I’ll say BOMA at the Bowl and the Awards Gala. Why? Because I love seeing people acknowledged, and the Hollywood Bowl is the most magical and unique concert venue in the world.

Who inspires you?

I can't choose just one - that’s impossible for me! So, being a music man, here is my list of 12 musicians who have inspired me throughout my life: Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Sting, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Jackson Browne, Rich Mullins, Peter Gabriel, Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry, and my father, the late great Ted Dechter.

If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose and why?

The greatest teacher and basketball coach of all time - Mr. John Wooden. A man of integrity, discipline, high morals, spirituality, wisdom, and the author of The Pyramid of Success.

What career advice do you live by?

Be humble yet persistent. Never stop learning how to do something better.

What's Happening in Advocacy

On the Front Lines for CRE: Advocacy in Action

We’ve scored some massive wins thanks to our engaged members. From burying SB 789 (Sen. Menjivar) which would have imposed a $5/sq ft. vacancy tax on vacant commercial space after 182 days, to supporting self-certification plans at LA City Hall, and now actively engaging in AB 380 (Asm. Gonzalez) which proposes commercial rent control during emergencies. The BOMA/GLA Advocacy team, along with our Government Affairs Committee (GAC) are on the front lines defending CRE.

Both of the above state bills are authored by LA County electeds (one from DTLA and the other from the San Fernando Valley). They highlight why our relationship building and outreach efforts funded by the BOMA/GLA Political Action Committee (BOMA/GLA PAC) are so critical for our continued work.

Policy Committees in Action

Our Sustainability Committee heard from Leading Edge Consulting Services on practical steps we can take together to implement and accomplish effective ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting in our industry.

Codes and Regulations Committee showcased the Northeast LA region with updates from multiple city officials on permitting trends, timelines, and services to help our members.

The month concluded with our Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee learning from LAPD on how to prepare for protests, acts of terror, and bomb threats at their properties. As well as what the new LA City public safety budget means for the commercial real estate industry.
