CASA Case Spotlight

CASA is in need of a volunteer for a three year old boy living with his grandmother in Fort Collins. He has experienced neglect and lacked a sober caregiver for most of his life. A volunteer who would be willing to visit with him, facilitate fun games and activities, and provide advocacy on his behalf would be greatly appreciated!

If you are interested in reviewing this case, please email Courtney@casalarimer.com.

Advocacy Corner

TBRI® Tip

TBRI® is an attachment-based and trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.

July’s TBRI® Tidbit: Three Relationship Agreements

As you plan activities with your CASA child/teen in the community, use these three agreements to help you stay on track and enjoy time together. Being clear on your behavior expectations as you head into crowded and more chaotic experiences like the local splash pad or outdoor story time will minimize outbursts. Share these three Agreements with your kiddo and you can even create hand motions to prompt easier learning.

Stick Together- Physically and emotionally stay engaged with each other. Have the child walk beside you or remain in eyesight. When having a conversation, stick together by listening and not interrupting each other.

No Hurts- Respect everyone’s body by not causing physical harm. This also means we do not harm each other with our words or overly harsh voice.

Have Fun- Above all else, have a good time visiting with your child/teen. Find activities that they enjoy. Create a fun environment in the car by having snacks, water, and silly icebreaker questions.

CASA Book Club

When: Wednesday, July 12th from 5-6:30pm

Where: Harmony House

We are reading and discussing The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman

When three-month-old Lia Lee arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she, her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos. This story illustrates a tragic case history of cultural miscommunication within the Western medical system.

You will receive 4 hours of continuing education credits for reading the book and joining our discussion.

Please RSVP to Nina Hamilton nina@casalarimer.com

CASA 2 CASA

When: Tuesday, August 8th from 12:00-1:00pm

Where: Harmony House

An essential aspect of the CASA commitment is to keep track of how the children you work with are doing with their education. It is common for CASA kids to struggle with education, and it is instrumental to their success for CASAs to report and advocate for education supports on their behalf. Contacting teachers and gaining access to online portals for school can be challenging. Please join DeAnn and Joe for pizza and a collaborative discussion on educational advocacy.

Please contact Joe Clifton joe@casalarimer.com to RSVP

This session will provide 1 hour of continuing education and is a safe space for you to be able to talk about your case.
