At the Cross
By Roger Hagan
What question did Jesus ask? What did He experience that day?
Jesus was taken through a fake trial.
Pilot could not please the people unless he condemned Jesus. He had Jesus scourged and taken to the cross. Jesus heard the peoples shout, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
A crown of thorns was forced on His head, and the Roman soldiers hit His head with a reed. He was scourged. He was mocked. He was forced to carry his own implement of death. He went to the cross sleep deprived. He was thirsty. He was reviled by the religious leaders that were supposed to teach the people about Him. He was hung on a cross between two criminals who mocked Him.
At the end of all of that he cried out, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He felt the separation of sin for the first time in His life. But He never sinned. He took on Himself your sin and mine and the sorrow caused Him to ask that question.
Why did He allow Himself to go through this? Hebrews 12:2 says, Jesus went through this “for the joy that was set before Him…” What kind of joy is this?
The joy that He had was an anticipatory joy. He saw a time where we would no longer have sin separating us from Him.
He went through that terrible struggle so that we could be with Him eternally.
He endured nakedness on the cross, the pain of thorns, nails, and harsh words so that we could be rescued from the grasp of eternal separation from Himself and the Father.
He traded places with us.
Come to the foot of the cross again and hear Him ask the Father, "Why have you forsaken me?”
Then, look in the mirror.
There's your answer.
(I encourage you to read Psalm 22 followed by Matthew 27:24-54 and see God’s plan and execution of your salvation.)
| A Final Word From Pastor Goetz |
As a preacher, it has been my humble privilege to stand in the sacred desk each Sabbath, and the sacred desk of the weekday in the office. My prayer has always been to be the "man in the arena."
My prayer for you--that you would allow God to throw yourself into the arena of being a laborer for the great harvest. Matthew 9:35-38. Nothing else matters.
Then came the last Saturday night. A festivity that, in our hearts, will only be outdone by the long-awaited marriage supper of the Lamb. We have experienced hundreds of Saturday nights together with you--hardly ever being alone at the close of a Sabbath during the last 8.5 years, it was fitting to spend one last one with all of you. Each one of you moved our hearts by being there. We must directly thank those who gave their prolonged time of planning so we all could come together. Thank you--Christine Baker, Aubrey Nelson, Sarah Schwisow, Vicki Kahler, Lindsay Carlisle, Carey Jordan, Pastor Leandro, Steve Phillips, and Andrea Orrison. Then there were each of you who shared the pies, burger, treats and the munchies. Let's do it again, for eternity.
Note: Pastor Goetz will be the Lead Pastor of the Centerville Seventh-day Adventist Church, Centerville, Ohio.

Search for a Lead Pastor at Campion |
Pastor Rodlie Ortiz, D. Min.
The Campion Church Pastoral Search Committee has recommended the name of Pastor Rodlie Ortiz to fill the position of lead pastor. He and his family are coming to visit the weekend of July 8; Pastor Ortiz will present the sermon that Sabbath morning. There will be an all-church potluck followed by a meet and greet and questions at 3:00 that afternoon. This is an opportunity to get acquainted and for both parties to prayerfully consider the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Ortiz has been on the pastor team of Pioneer Memorial Church at Andrews University since June of 2011, serving as outreach pastor. Ortiz graduated from Southern Adventist University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology in 2002, a Master of Divinity from Andrews University in 2005, and a Doctor of Ministry, Missional Leadership Cohort from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2019.

Dedication of the Prayer Garden was held on Sabbath, May 20th. The garden is located on the east side of the sanctuary. The idea originated with Kari Lange's first and second grade class at HMS four years ago when the students asked if a prayer garden could be built on the church property. They received approval and came up with the idea to start a small business making chocolate candy to sell, thus raising $5,000. A generous donation to the project was made in memory of Sarah and Art Cushing by their family. Jamie Autrey heard about the project and proposed an idea to Mrs. Lange and Paul Bragaw, principal at that time. It was submitted to the church board for approval and the work began.
Large timbers were cut and donated by the McComb family sawmill in Canon City. The project brought together a crew of people to measure, cut, sand and finish the 12' X 12" X 8' timbers which were used for the seating around the cross. There are 24 seats in a semi-circle which represent the 24 elders sitting around the throne of God in Revelation. The cross was raised by some of the Campion students, Pastor Micheal Goeetz and Pastor Leandro Bizama while Campion Academy and HMS students looked on. Six large jars made by Jamie Autrey sit on pedestals and a sandstone slab on the north side of the garden. The jars are purple and blue and represent the jars of water Jesus used to perform His first miracle. The last major piece was made possible by Victor Issa. His rendition of Jesus titled "Welcome Home Children" was placed facing northeast to welcome the students from HMS as they come to the garden for worship and for all coming into the garden for prayer. There are more elements to come as this is a work in progress.
Recognition and thanks go to the following who have helped make this project a reality: Bob Aitken, Jamie Autrey, Timm Eichmann, Gary Patterson, Neil and Naomi Sigler, and Dick Stenbakken. Special thanks to Jeff Kluchesky, CA Grounds Superintendent, for helping with so many things such as location of sprinkler lines and use of tools and equipment for almost all phases of the project. Please come and visit the prayer garden and bring friends or family to worship and pray together at the foot of the cross.

Where Does Your Offering Go? |
In last month’s newsletter I shared who is eligible to receive tithe monies—it is more than just pastoral pay! It is interesting that in past decades the North American Division (NAD) contributed more of its tithe offerings to the General Conference (GC) than did any other division because of our resources and history. In 2015 the NAD was contributing 7% of its tithe and the other divisions about 2%. Currently, 4.65% of tithe in the NAD goes to the GC; this will decrease to 3.85% in 2024. Darin Gottfried, our Rocky Mountain Conference treasurer, says this changing percentage is a big help to our local conference. The percentage for the other divisions has increased slightly as well.
Each month, when I list in the newsletter the offerings for that month, I indicate whether it is a World Budget item or whether it is a North American Division item as some of our offerings are kept entirely in NAD. Women's Ministries offering, Oakwood University, the television and radio programs in NAD, Adventist Community Services (ACS), and Christian Record are examples of this.
Other offerings are called World Budget. If no special project is indicated, the offering goes into a general fund that the General Conference uses and distributes. Other offerings, however, are designated to a particular department or mission project. This will be noted when I list the various offerings for the current month.
In next month’s newsletter, I will tell you a little more about the Rocky Mountain Advance offering as its percentages and designations have changed.

We would like to welcome Sylvia Klamm to our Campion Church family! She and her daughter Robin Cook have been attending, and sometimes even the next two generations, Christi and Mandi, are able to join us on Sabbath. Sylvia grew up in San Diego, California, and attended a Catholic school for some time. Other than the Christmas and Easter story, she says she didn’t know much about Jesus and His work on our behalf. Her questions and request for a Bible were left unfulfilled.
Sylvia moved to Denver when she married her first husband, Art, and started learning through his Seventh-day Adventist sister about Jesus’ personal love and forgiveness. Art died when their daughter Robin was 12 years-old; for a while Sylvia was focusing on working and raising a daughter. She met David in 1978, and they married and moved to Parker, Colorado. Sylvia started attending the Franktown church, where she found out about Campion because everyone sent their children to the academy. She thought they were wonderful, polite children!
At this time Sylvia started studying the Bible more with Karen Lewis, and she realized the Holy Spirit was working on her heart, speaking to her in her mind, and she started learning about Jesus in earnest.
Sylvia says, “Christ is my Savior and I am His child. I know He’s there. He’s at the door knocking, and you just open the door and let Him in.” She has shared her passion for Jesus with those around her, including her husband David, who decided to be baptized just before he died in 2008, with her mother who declared her love for Jesus shortly before she died in 2013, and daily with her 91-year old neighbor.
Once Sylvia moved to northern Colorado, she was delighted to learn that Campion was not only an academy but also a church. She says when she walked in the first time, she felt like she was at home. Welcome home, Sylvia!

Dean, Connie, Kayla and Grant Johnson |
The Johnson family had been long-time members of the Boulder Seventh-day Adventist Church, prior to transferring to Campion. Dean grew up in Boulder and Connie in northern California. They met while attending Union College and were married in the Boulder church in 1983. They have two adult children, Kayla and Grant.
Dean works for Berlin flooring in Boulder and Connie is a care-giver. The family loves photography and they travel to Nebraska in late winter to photograph the Sandhill Crane migration. They enjoy camping in the Rockies as a family, along with 4-wheeling, paddle boarding, and snowshoeing.
The Johnsons are happy to be a part of the Campion family and are enjoying the various activities Campion offers. Welcome Dean, Connie, Kayla and Grant to the Campion church.

Judah Nelson, son of Chris and Aubrey Nelson was baptized by his grandfather Eric Nelson on Judah's birthday. Judah is 12 years old and attends HMS where he is in the 6th grade. Judah's testimony is as follows: "Because I love Jesus, I want to be baptized. Baptism is my way of showing that I love Him. Baptism is a way to show that I want Jesus to wash away my sins and I want to follow Him for the rest of my life."

Pat Young has been searching for years, looking for the church where she feels God wants her to be. One day when she came home from running errands, she found a flyer by her front door inviting her to a Revelation Seminar. God impressed her that she needed to attend. She says that from the moment she stepped through the doors of our church, she felt the warmth of the members. She was particularly looking for integrity on the part of the pastors and feels she has found that at Campion. Pat's testimony is as follows: "I want to be baptized because I want to live a life guided by the Holy Spirit. Today I clean the slate and from now on, I only live by my faith and love in God." Pastor Bizama had the privilege of baptizing Pat.

July 1, 15, and 29: Local Church Budget
There are five Sabbaths this month so there are three opportunities to support our local budget. People travel and take advantage of the opportunities to do other things during the summer, and sometimes the budget suffers. We will soon be welcoming a new pastor; let us assure him that we are supportive and that this church is active and doing things and going places! Let us support our church budget—all of this offering stays right here in our own church and community.
July 8: World Budget
This offering goes to the General Conference and is then divided up as needed in the world field; some goes to administration, some for new work, some to maintain work in places that are not economically able to support the work, and some to special opportunities to make a difference.
July 22: Rocky Mountain Conference Advance
The name of this offering really describes what it does—it goes to advance the sharing of the Gospel in our very own conference through education, evangelism, supporting our youth and summer camps, and helping with building schools and churches. This is a case where mission starts at home.
