LBPD Completes Introductory Neighborhood Walks Program
As the summer season begins in Long Beach, we’d like to look back at our first round of our Neighborhood Walks program—which concluded in June of this year. Starting in February 2021, Neighborhood Walks was created to increase engagement between our community and police officers at a more personable level. Each of our four patrol divisions had an iteration of the program over the course of 16 months, and we have plans to start it up again later this year!

Celebrate Fourth of July Safely
We want everyone to enjoy the 4th of July holiday safely and responsibly. In order to keep the City’s residents and visitors safe, all personal fireworks, even those deemed “Safe and Sane,” are illegal in the City of Long Beach.
The Long Beach Police Department always seeks voluntary compliance to ensure public safety. While officers make every effort to respond to reports of illegal fireworks, they must witness the activity in order to make an arrest. Community members who witness illegal fireworks activity also have the option to sign a private person’s arrest form which will allow officers to take action after investigating an incident.
Anyone cited or arrested for fireworks violations may be faced with a $1,000 fine, sentenced to jail for six months, or both.

Etch and Catch Event
To help support residents in preventing potential catalytic converter thefts, we partnered with the City of Long Beach’s Fleet Services Bureau to host a free catalytic converter etching event. The event took place on June 4 and was open to any Long Beach resident to have their vehicle's VIN or license plate number etched onto the catalytic converter of their vehicle. This process can assist LBPD investigations if the catalytic converter is stolen and may also discourage criminals from stealing it. We’re proud to have etched over 200 residents’ catalytic converters during this event.

LBPD Expo for High School Students
In late spring, we hosted students from the McBride, Cabrillo, and Jordan High School’s Criminal Justice Clubs for a series of LBPD Expo Events at the Police Academy. Students explored different details within the department and even had the chance to run the Physical Ability Test. Officers from the Motors Detail, SWAT, Dive Team, Explorers, K9, and Air Support interacted with the students while they shared experiences and had “Pizza With A Cop”. We were thrilled to host this series for all these great students and look forward to additional events in the future!

Law Enforcement Torch Run
On June 9, LBPD employees were honored to continue the yearly tradition of participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Southern California. The Torch Run is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics with more than 2,000 officers in So Cal championing acceptance and inclusion. It was an honor for them to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics!

LBPD Officers Arrest Robbery Suspect and Seize Two Firearms
In late May, a commercial robbery occurred where the suspect brandished a firearm, stole property, & fled in a vehicle. East Division and South Division officers responded & an LBPD K-9 unit quickly located the suspect vehicle. The driver was arrested & 2 firearms were seized. Great work!

LBPD Detectives Arrest Suspect Wanted for Attempted Murder and Carjacking
Over the course of a few months, an investigation involving Robbery and SID detectives led to a late-May arrest of a wanted attempted murder and carjacking suspect.

New Street Takeover Ordinance
Street racing is dangerous and not tolerated in Long Beach! Recently, the Long Beach City Council passed a new ordinance which allows LBPD officers to take enforcement action against spectators of street races.

Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration
On Saturday, June 18—several of our officers joined the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration in Rainbow Lagoon Park. Members of our recruitment team had a great time talking with many members of our community, and even put a few young residents through a mini agility course!

AAPI Heritage Month
During Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, we spoke with Officer Hem who shared why his culture and community were among the reasons he decided to pursue his career with the LBPD.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
May was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and our Special Victims detectives shared several messages to help raise awareness, encourage discussion, and educate our community on topics relating to Sexual Assault. To view the entire video series, click here.
