Centred Outdoors participants at Soaring Eagle Wetland for a guided outing led by Mark Nale

Hello ClearWater,

As you'll read and see below, ClearWater has been out and about this July with many of our community partners to expand and strengthen local conservation efforts.

In addition to advancing stream restoration and land conservation projects, our Centred Outdoors team has been hosting guided outings up to three times per week at inspiring destinations such as the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden (pictured) and the Little Juniata Natural area. There's still plenty of adventures left to join this summer, too! To get connected, visit a list of upcoming events and subscribe to our Adventure Guide to be the first to know where we're heading next!

Also, join us in welcoming three new members of the ClearWater team! Our ongoing stream restoration efforts will now be led by Jennifer Dombroskie, riparian program manager, with support from Jillian Barskey, streamside projects coordinator. Additionally Sean McConnell, office manager, joined ClearWater in the spring. You can get to know our new staff members and get in touch with them via our staff page or by replying to this message!

July has been a busy month, but not too busy to appreciate our engaged community and you for supporting this work in any way possible - thank you!

Sincerely,

Deb Nardone

Executive Director, ClearWater Conservancy

ClearWater in the Community

Thank you Native Garden volunteers! These individuals shared their evening with us on July 5 to maintain the native garden growing around ClearWater’s office.

Join us for native garden night at ClearWater's office on the first Wednesday of every month between 5-7 p.m. Our next session will be August 2. Expect to work a little while learning a LOT about the native plants in our garden and how to support pollinators in your own yard.

Olivia Stas, assistant adventure coordinator for ClearWater's Centred Outdoors, found a box turtle during a guided outing at Dutch Alvin Trail on July 2. "The timing was great," said Olivia. "It was almost like it was waiting there for us!"

An informative, memorable day at ChicorlyLane

In a stewardship gathering on July 9 at ChicoryLane near Spring Mills in Penns Valley, thirty-four participants heard landowners John and Catherine Smith describe their use of native plants to improve habitats along two tributaries of Penns Creek flowing through the property. John emphasized their strategic choice to improve the ecology of a site by choosing natives that are most beneficial for wildlife. Details and project maps can be found on the website chicorylane.com under “Ecological Enhancement.”

Earlier in spring, ClearWater volunteers planted trees and shrubs for this project. On July 9 ClearWater’s Suzy Yetter, along with ChicoryLane land manager James Lesher (pictured to the left, pointing out a Canada lily) and assistant Emma Lake, led interpretive walks to demonstration sites. Barn historian Christopher Macneal offered historical perspective in an illustrated talk on barns and farming in nineteenth century Penns Valley. (Pictured below, a closer look at the Canada lily)

These talks and walks occurred on an old farm surveyed for the Penn family in 1766 and recorded as “Hopewell situate at the head of Penns Creek.” In 1974 the Smiths bought it. After living there awhile, they named it ChicoryLane. In 2017 ClearWater established a conservation easement to permanently protect it.  The Penns Valley Conservation Association in a Landowner Education Series sponsored the July 9 event. You can learn more about ChircoryLane here.
