Critter Chronicles

Heart Connections - July 2024

July was a great month for adoptions, with 121 pets finding their forever homes! Also, 67 pets were transferred to adoption-guaranteed partners through our Highway to Home program, making it our best month of the year! Thank you to everyone for making July such an amazing month for the people and pets of the communities we serve.

July 2024 Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

Kids of all ages are invited to GMHS to read to our shelter pets this summer! Participants can share their love of books, improve their reading skills, and help enrich the lives of our shelter animals while earning fun prizes until August 18! Most animals find the human voice to be comforting and soothing, while they provide no judgement to the reader presenting.

Simply stop by GMHS Tuesday-Sunday of each week from 12-5 PM! We have books and pillows all ready for you.

The perfect birthday party for junior pet advocates is at GMHS!

Celebrate your child at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society! Our Outreach Specialist will guide you and your guests through crafts and activities tailored to the interests of your child and of course, a tour to meet some of our adoptable pets! Email for more info or call us at 804-693-5520!

Critical to GMHS' ability to save these tiny lives is growing the ranks of our kitten foster volunteers. From bottle babies to those who are several weeks old, kittens reared in a home grow healthy and strong before adoption or transfer to one of our adoption-guaranteed partners.

All foster volunteers receive training and necessary supplies. If you would like to join our foster team and be a super hero for our community's kittens,

Compassionate Community

We want to thank all of our friends for your generous donation of pet food and supplies brought to the shelter and through our Amazon and Chewy Wish Lists. We are grateful for your support! GMHS is very fortunate to have amazing people in our community with a heart for pets.

A huge thank you to Nylabone for the donation of toys for every single dog at GMHS! Our pups couldn't be more grateful.

When making a contribution to GMHS, we invite you to join our Faithful Friends. (Just check the box when donating to make yours a monthly gift.)

Our Faithful Friends and their sustaining contributions help make our life-saving mission possible, and we thank you for your support!

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Myrtle

Can we talk about how cute Myrtle is?! This sweet girl was found as a stray, so we do not know her background. She's young, we think around 2 years. What we do know is how friendly she has been with staff since coming in. She loves making friends! She has a wiggly butt because she gets so excited to meet new people. She cannot live with small animals or cats. We do not know her history with dogs but she seems to enjoy the children she has met at the shelter. Help us find Myrtle her forever family!
