July 2025 Critter Chronicles

Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

For years, Kane watched other dogs come and go, always waiting for his turn. Thanks to the generosity of our friends, Kane had everything he needed while he waited: a warm bed, nutritious food, enrichment and playtime, veterinary care, and above all, love and reassurance from our dedicated team. Your support gave Kane not just comfort, but time—the most important gift of all for animals like him.

We’re overjoyed to share that Kane has found his forever family! These days, he spends his time going on daily walks, cuddling on the couch, and enjoying the life he always deserved. His story is one of hope and healing, made possible by friends like you.

July Adoptions

We’re thrilled to share that July was another impactful month at GMHS! A total of 113 pets found loving homes through adoption, and 125 pets hit the road to a brighter future through our Highway to Home program with our rescue partners, making it a record breaking month! Every adoption and transfer means a second chance at a happy life, and it’s all made possible thanks to the compassion of our community, supporters, and partners. Thank you for being part of this lifesaving journey!

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

Our GMHS volunteers are truly the heart of everything we do! Whether it’s answering phone calls, driving transports, walking dogs, socializing cats, or lending a hand at events like Kids Movie Night, they show up with smiles and endless dedication. We’re so lucky to have such an incredible team making a difference for homeless pets every single day.

Compassionate Community

When our friends at Walmart Gloucester heard we were bursting at the seams with cats and kittens, they jumped into action! Thanks to their generous donation of food, litter, and supplies, our feline friends are feeling the love. Thank you, Walmart Gloucester, for being such a wonderful part of our community!

These 5 awesome Baystars FC Whitecaps decided to celebrate their birthdays together last month — but with a twist: instead of gifts, they asked for donations to GMHS! They delivered the donations themselves — spreading kindness, teamwork, and a whole lot of tail wags. Let’s give these boys a big round of applause for their generosity and big hearts!

Thank you to Miller's Services for their generous donation of dog food to our shelter! Your support helps us keep our pups happy, healthy, and well-fed while they wait for their forever homes. We’re so grateful!

A big THANK YOU to Walmart Gloucester for donating playdough and supplies for our upcoming community event! Your generosity helps us create fun, hands-on activities for families while supporting our homeless pets. We’re so grateful for your partnership and kindness!

Our amazing friends at Eastfields Farms Blueberries are collecting donations for the pets at GMHS, and we are blown away by the generosity of our community—$587 has been raised already! Donations will continue to be collected through the end of the season and added to their annual fundraiser for GMHS. We are so thankful to everyone who has given!

Support GMHS and Save Lives

Little baby ‘Tuna' was outside and all alone on a rainy day in Gloucester this month when a kind person spotted him and scooped him up and brought him to GMHS. He was estimated to be about 4 weeks old, weighed just a pound, and the Shelter’s medical team saw that he had Phthisis bulbi in his right eye— a condition where the eye shrinks and becomes non-functional due to severe damage or disease — it's painful, and irreversible.

He spent time with a loving foster to get him healthy enough for surgery to remove that eye. Now all healed from surgery, he’s doing amazing well and becoming friends with Hattie, the three-legged dog in the home also adopted from GMHS. Little baby ‘Tuna' will be adopted as soon as he gets the all clear from the veterinarian!

You make this possible, thank you! Animals like baby ‘Tuna' and ‘Hattie' get all the care they need — for as long as they need — until their perfect match comes along!

Donations can be made online, over the phone (804-693-5520), and mail (P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061).
