Recommended Reading
Elizabeth Meade, MD, FAAP
President, WCAAP Board of Trustees

As pediatricians, we are deeply aware of the incredible value books have in showing children worlds that are different than their own, expanding their thinking, and teaching them the values we want them to carry forward into adult life. Here is a wonderfully curated reading list from Healthy Children for children of all ages on topics ranging from expressing emotions to racism and social justice. We hope this can be a resource to share with the families you care for, and to use in your own homes if you are looking for new books to share with your family.

Legislative Advocacy in the Time of COVID-19
Crystal Shen, MD, MPH, FAAP
Co-chair, WCAAP Legislative Committee

In light of the projected Washington revenue shortfall of $4.5 billion dollars, multiple budget cuts have been proposed by the Health Care Authority (HCA) which would impact children. These cuts include funding for access to care for undocumented children, interpreter services, maternity services, the PAL referral line, and more.

Preventing Medicine Misuse and Alcohol and Drug Use at Home
Yolanda Evans, MD, MPH, FAAP
Seattle Children's Adolescent Medicine Team

These are unusually challenging and stressful times. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way humanity lives, upended our patterns for work and school, and rewired our relationships. We are adapting to these new norms during an emotional reckoning about societal injustice and systemic racism.  Teens in particular are grappling with the loss of normal personal connections with peers and heightened worries about the future and their place in it.

Rapid Behavioral Health Learning Series for PCPs
Frances Chalmers, MD, FAAP
Co-chair, WCAAP Health Care Transformation Committee

In early April, while clinicians were deep in the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WCAAP responded to provider requests, funded, and delivered a Rapid Behavioral Health Learning Series to assist primary care providers in supporting and treating their growing panel of patients with behavioral health concerns.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with reported prevalence in the United States of 1 in 54 children. (AAP News, 2020) Most Pediatric primary care providers will have children with ASD as patients, yet many feel unprepared to handle the complex needs of these patients. New resources and training can help.

WCAAP Offers Provider Well-Being Resources
Kimberlee Hauff, MD, FAAP
Secretary, WCAAP Board of Trustees

As a Pediatric Hospitalist working nights and weekends it can be hard to have a set daily schedule. Now, more than ever, I need to make a conscious effort to practice relaxation techniques and mindfulness. I'm currently working my way through a "30 Days of Mindfulness" practice. Am I doing it every day? No. Am I doing it every other day? No. Am I doing it in the middle of the night shift? Maybe. But, like most of you, I'm doing the best I can - and find it helpful every time I do.

New Group Member: Pediatrics Northwest
Sarah Rafton, MSW
Executive Director, WCAAP
This past month Pediatrics Northwest became the latest large pediatric practice to join the WCAAP as a group member!  Their membership reflects the longstanding meaningful partnership the WCAAP and Pediatrics Northwest have shared.  Many Pediatrics Northwest pediatricians and subspecialists have been actively involved with the WCAAP.  Mary Ann Woodruff has worked tirelessly with the Chapter promoting Early Learning, Behavioral Health Integration, and championing Reach out and Read. Julian Ayer served on our Board over the past ten years, first as a trustee and then just recently finished his term as our Chapter Secretary. The list goes on...

WCAAP's Membership & Engagement Committee Wants Your Help!
The WCAAP Membership and Engagement Committee is seeking new members! The committee's goals are to maintain and increase membership value for the WCAAP community and create venues for socio-politically and professionally relevant learning opportunities as it supports pediatric providers, practices, and communities across the state. Recent efforts include developing a bank of provider wellness resources in challenging times, creating listening sessions across Washington (now virtual), and developing opportunities for members to connect with and support each other through mentorship. We meet quarterly via phone or Zoom with occasional ad-hoc meetings added as needed. This is a great opportunity to help the Chapter ensure we are responding to member needs and providing excellent value. Our committee is small but mighty and we welcome your participation!

Contact co-chairs Wei-Jen Hsieh or Rishi Mistry if you are interested in learning more!

Provider Relief Funding: Deadline July 20th

Pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, and pediatric surgeons can apply for a new Medicaid and CHIP targeted allocation of approximately $15 billion.

AAP recommends that all eligible members apply for this funding.   The deadline to apply is July 20th.
