Main Street Challenge Grant
Local Applications due July 5
Get Funding for Your Downtown Building Project up to $100,000.
Successful revitalization projects have made Iowa Downtown centers popular travel destinations by increasing investments in local businesses, residential areas, and cultural developments in their surrounding communities. To continue this momentum, the Iowa Economic Development Authority has created the Main Street Challenge Grant for brick-and-mortar projects.
Main Street Iowa communities, including Burlington, may apply for the Main Street Challenge Grant. Eligible projects must be within the Downtown district. They can include building rehabilitations, facade improvements, new construction, or reuse projects. Plans will be locally judged on preservation standards, architectural significance, and impact on the community.
The maximum dollar amount to be awarded is $100,000 with a minimum award of $25,000 per project. A minimum 1:1 match is required. Other federal or state grant program awards may not be used to satisfy the cash match for the project/property. Main Street organizations may apply on behalf of one project/property.

Downtown Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District Tax
Downtown Burlington owes its vibrancy and progress to the Self-Supporting
Municipal Improvement District Tax, SSMID. Thanks to the support of the
stakeholders, this tax has been able to fuel investment in the Downtown area,
creating a thriving hub of commerce, entertainment, and community.
The tax has enabled the city to undertake numerous projects aimed at improving the infrastructure, beautifying the streets, and fostering a welcoming environment for businesses and residents alike. Without the Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement
District Tax, Downtown Burlington would not be the bustling, dynamic center that it is today.
Whether a business owner looking to establish a presence in the city or a resident seeking a vibrant, livable community, SSMID has been instrumental in making Downtown Burlington the place to be.
Businesses located within SSMID districts have seen an increase in foot traffic due to the improvements made possible by the tax revenue. These improvements include enhanced streetscapes, landscaping, public art, and increased safety measures.
The economic development seen in SSMID tax districts has been significant, with many areas experiencing increased property values and new business development. This growth has contributed to the overall success of these districts and has provided a positive impact on the local economy.
The SSMID Tax Districts have been successful in attracting new businesses to the area and encouraging existing businesses to stay
and invest in their properties. This has led to a revitalization of the district, with new restaurants, shops, and other businesses opening.
Thank you to the Downtown stakeholders that have made Downtown what it is today and what it will be in just a few years!
