Hello Friends,

July is a busy month at the Emerson! We have installed three beautiful new exhibits featuring portraits, figures, and plein air landscapes created by local and regional artists. Though we will not be hosting exhibit receptions during Covid, you are invited to come in and explore the galleries in a safe, self-guided, socially distant way.

Annually, the month of July marks a new beginning at the Emerson as new tenants open their studios/galleries. In addition to the opening of new studios/galleries, this July makes the opening of a new restaurant in the building. Below is a list of all of the new creative folks that will be calling the Emerson home. If you feel comfortable, please come visit them. Or, if you are hunkering down, please consider visiting their websites. Folks here are more than willing to assist you in their galleries, or with an online purchase. Many are also offering curbside pick-up or shipping.

Thank you to all of our friends and families that have enrolled in our summer programs (online and in person). Even with the challenges that everyone is facing due to Covid-19 the Emerson has been able to move forward with enriching summer camps and two adult art education classes. While our classrooms feel different, the outcome feels right. We feel incredibly fortunate to continue to be here for our community to gather safely, to explore the arts, and to continue to learn together.

With gratitude,
Susan Denson-Guy
Executive Director

Figures - Juried Group Show
July 10 - August 7, 2020
Open M-F,  10am to 4pm
Portraits - Juried Group Show
July 10 - August 28, 2020
The theme Figures & Portraits showcases the wide variety of human face and form. Each artist's unique representation captures an essence and a mood of that particular individual. These artworks ask the view to engage, to look deeper, and to consider the what the subject is saying.
We received one of the largest applicant pools in our recent history of Calls for Art. This was a welcome assurance that we all desire to catch a glimpse of the symbiotic relationship between an artist and muse. Artists from all backgrounds and areas of focus cannot deny the majesty and power that comes with visually representing the human soul. We hope you are as amazed and appreciative of these works as we are.
A Glimpse of Nature's Splendor
Plein-Air Painters Group Show
July 3 - August 26, 2020
When an artist ventures outside the studio into this world, the entire symphony of nature finds its way into their creations. We live in a dramatic and compelling environment, often the very reason we have come to live here. Nature in all her glory is everywhere. To create en plein-air is to share in this real drama capturing a moment in time as we are experiencing it.

Robert Royhl is a painter who has been living and working in Bozeman, MT for the past twenty-five years. Robert was born in New York City, but grew up in Tucson, Arizona and has lived and traveled all over the West.
Much of Robert's career has been involved with international art projects. He has worked in Japan and South Africa, as well as a project in San Diego with Mexican and American artists. He spent two years immersed in the culture of Japan, and for shorter periods he has worked in South Africa and Europe. These encounters, while enlarging his artistic vision, have only clarified his profound attachment to the American West. His idea of this region is very distant from the earlier more Romantic art movements, more abstractly scientific and more psychologically dislocated; a quantum mechanics representation of our conflicted relationship to the natural world.

"My work is based on direct observation of the landscape. We tend to take looking at reality as an ordinary, even, banal thing, but I find it is very mysterious. As my vision of a location deepens I see there is no stability at all, only a convergence of paths whose gravities and attractions pull us into a Brownian motion of forms that assists in our own flowerings and disappearances. In a sense, there is no place at all."
Widely exhibited since the early 70's, Robert has shown his work in galleries and museums throughout California, Arizona, Japan and Montana, and is represented by the Davis Dominguez Gallery in Tucson .
Currently he is working on a series of landscapes of the Headwaters of the Missouri River. The world of the western United States from the Sonoran Desert to the Northern Rockies has inspired his most recent work.
