The warm weather is here and summer reading is underway at the Jacob Edwards Library! The adult, young adult and children's areas all have exciting reading incentive contests along with lively programming throughout the month. Adults and young adults can try their hand at Summer Reading BINGO 2019. Students may find their summer reading books in designated areas in the main hall on the first floor, and in the children's room on the ground floor. Stop in and register for the summer reading program for chances to win prizes that are "out of this world!"
Art Exhibition
The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to host the work of local artist Isabella Maluf throughout the month of July. The artist's work - paintings in oil and acrylic - is on view during library opening hours. There will be a reception for the artist on
Thursday, July 11th at 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library. All welcome!
Summer Meals Program
The Jacob Edwards Library is a site for the 2019 summer meals program. Lunch will be provided, free of charge, for those aged 18 and under at the library from
June 24 through August 2, 2019 between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm. Stop by the library for a healthy lunch, and stay for a fun program, to read a new book, and the opportunity to meet new friends!
Digital News
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) has partnered with BiblioBoard's Indie Author Project to provide over 30 independently-published books available throughout the summer. Read more about this exciting opportunity to access this digital collection until September 2

July's Featured Display: ArtBella: Oil & Acrylic Paintings by Isabella Maluf
 The Jacob Edwards Library is delighted to host the artwork of Isabella Maluf during the month of July. The work is on view during library opening hours. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, July 11th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library. All welcome!
Artist Statement:
I am originally from Brazil and my passion for art was born within me. Since I was very little I played piano and danced ballet for many years. Thanks to my Mother, I had the opportunity to admire all artistic works, everything from crochet to sculpture. I discovered my passion for painting at a later age and amazingly surprised myself! I'm a self-taught artist that loves the freedom to create from my heart so I can express my feelings without worrying about professional training or degrees. My art is not meant to be compared with professional artists'; I believe that everyone has their own art inside of them. My paintings are creations of my inner personal expressions that I truly enjoy to share freely with the world. I have been a natural lover of art and beauty. For me, painting is a blessing, a gift from my Higher Self that helps me to express my feelings from the bottom of my heart. Painting is a part of my 'essence.' It was already there and happened to be expressed without conventional methods, tools or techniques. I use acrylic as well as oil in my paintings. My relationship with nature and people is my inspiration, and my curiosity is the fuel to explore my creativity. That's what I am! A self-taught artist that creates with passion! I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy making it!
Isabella Garcia Banolas Maluf is a self-taught painter, pharmacist,
married mother of two who lives in Woodstock, CT. She was born in 1967, in Tupancireta, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Her ancestors were immigrants from Italy and Spain. She attended the School of Pharmacy at UFRS, Brazil, and specialized in Homeopathy remedies. Her hunger for knowledge and curiosity inspired her to try a different kind of arts like music, dance, and at an older age, painting. A Renaissance art lover, she likes to learn about Leonardo da Vinci's life. For her, he is the most creative mind this world has ever seen. Also, Isabella studies Astrology, Tarot Cards, Kabbalah and others. She thanks her paintings for helping her overcome the dark side of life. The art of painting gives her the opportunity to rise and shine her light again.

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to host a concert with musician/songwriters Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards and their bandmates Doug Williamson on bass and piano and Peter Hart on pedal steel guitar. They continue to impress listeners with their heartfelt songs and to inspire an even deeper appreciation of contemporary American folk music.
Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards are clearly inheritors of a timeless legacy, creating music that is both original and evocative of a rich tradition. Blending distinctive voices and a wide range of accompaniment (guitar, harmonica, ukulele, clarinet, penny whistle, electric bass), their songs have been well-received by audiences around the eastern United States and Canada since 2010. Transcending the genre of folk Americana, their music echoes inspiration from traditional folk duos and singer/songwriters, combining beautiful harmonies and a lyrical intensity, while establishing a unique sound of their own.
Both artists are products of central Massachusetts mill and factory towns, and for all their national exposure, they are passionately dedicated to the region and what it has to offer. Each summer for the past decade they have organized the "Massachusetts Walking Tour" where they hike the roads and trails of the Commonwealth, more than 100 miles in less than two weeks, in support of the arts in local communities along the way. Each evening they stop over in yet another Massachusetts town, putting on a free concert there, along with local performers and fellow artists who accompany them on their journey.

Tom and Debbie O'Carroll's Loony Lunar Magic Show celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with exciting magic, fun comedy and lively songs about our amazing satellite. Youngsters will learn about Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, the astronauts who made this incredible journey, as well as Katherine Johnson the NASA mathematician who made their journey possible! They will learn about a lunar eclipse; discover why most earthlings see a rabbit, not a face, in the moon; have fun exploring the phases of the moon and much more! Debbie O'Carroll wrote the original script and built the highly visual stage props.Tom O'Carroll has selected a variety of favorite songs about the moon to share. Together they create a delightful way for children of all ages to experience the moon myths, moon facts and moon science featured in The Loony Lunar Magic Show.

Zach LaVergne Mustard Seed Microfarm

Zack LaVergne is the owner of Mustard Seed Microfarm in Southbridge. He will talk about his venture of what started as a small backyard garden in 2017, and has grown into a ¼ acre Certified Naturally Grown market garden specializing in growing super fresh fruits and vegetables for the local community. Zack is passionate about farming and is particularly interested in growing and preserving heirloom fruits and vegetables. Zack also serves his community as the chair of the Southbridge Agricultural Commission which works to preserve and promote agriculture in Southbridge.

Turtle Rescue League

The Turtle rescue League was founded in 2009, with the goal of protecting our native turtle species. From the beginning, the Turtle Rescue League (TRL) has been a native turtle rescue, providing assistance for non-native and pet turtle issues only secondarily. Our doors are always open to the native turtles of the Northeastern United States. It is because of this our acceptance of non-native species is very restricted in order to maintain quarantine and protect the native turtles that call our wilds their home.

Ed the Wizard

Join us for a magic show with Ed The Wizard where magical secrets are about to be shared! Using everyday objects found at home, Ed takes the audience along with him for some fun science experiments! Students are challenged with questions about Alchemy, Scientific Principles, and their general knowledge of the physical world.
This program is ideal for students of all grades! Using three of the four Classical Greek Elements, Earth, Wind, Water, (sorry, no Fire), learn how to change the properties of water, look though solid objects, and defy gravity.
