JULY NEWS
The Path Forward: Fall 2020
William & Mary is preparing for an early opening and an in-person semester in fall 2020, consistent with Virginia’s public health guidelines (pdf) for higher education.

W&M will offer three semesters – fall, spring and summer – to provide maximum flexibility for students. The fall 2020 semester will include a condensed schedule that begins a week early and ends before Thanksgiving. We will have no fall break. William & Mary is taking a phased approach to decision-making, and will continue to update the community as more information and details become available.

As we return to campus, our governing themes are flexibility, safety, wellness, equity, collaboration, innovation and service. A hallmark of the fall semester will be engaging the creativity of William & Mary in pragmatic solutions to support our communities under pandemic conditions.
Residence Life Updates
A phased move-in process is planned for August 2020. In order for us to manage the number of people on campus and in buildings each resident will schedule a move-in appointment. The move-in schedule is below.

  • August 8-11         Early Arrivals (student employees, etc.)
  • August 12-14       New Student Move In
  • August 15-18       Returning Students

Details regarding how and when to make appointments will be shared with residents by July 15, we will make arrangements for families with siblings. There will be approximately 500 appointments available each day, spread across campus.

We are excited to welcome new and returning students back to campus!

President Rowe featured on 60 Minutes
William & Mary was featured in a segment on “60 Minutes” June 14 that explored how universities nationwide are working to reopen this fall during the greatest pandemic in 100 years.

Journalist John Dickerson recently interviewed Rowe on the W&M campus, where she and her husband are now the only residents. Rowe walks the campus daily, thinking about the students she misses greatly and the challenges presented by COVID-19, Dickerson said.
Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation proves vital in pivot to remote classes
William & Mary’s decision in early March to move all classes to a remote format in response to COVID-19 gave the newly created Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation an urgent purpose: Help faculty and students complete the semester.

The Studio opened last August as a hub for teaching and learning at W&M to assist faculty collaboration across traditional boundaries and leverage new technologies that support diverse modes of teaching. The need for those services came into sharp focus this spring.
W&M School of Education Dean Announced
Robert C. Knoeppel, dean of the University of South Florida’s College of Education, longtime educator and noted scholar on educational finance innovation, has been chosen as the next dean of William & Mary’s School of Education.

Knoeppel, who studies school finance, accountability policy and leadership, will become dean July 15, 2020. The current dean, Spencer “Skip” Niles, will continue at the school as a professor in the counselor education program.
W&M Student Account News
The W&M Fall 2020 semester eBill statement is scheduled for delivery on July 10, 2020 and is due August 3, 2020. The W&M Tuition Payment Plan will open for enrollment once eBills are published.
  • Have your student provide access to their W&M eServices account by making you an authorized user. See important information and instructions at www.wm.edu/eservices.
  • Please ask your student to sign up for Direct Deposit through eServices to expedite any credit balance refunds.
  • Watch for monthly eBill Statements that may include printing charges or other incidental fees. Students and authorized users will receive an email notification to alert you of a new eBill with any amount due. Tuition Payment Plans will adjust accordingly.
Career Opportunities
Has your student accessed their TribeCareers.wm.edu account lately?

They can indicate their Industry Newsletter selections by updating their Academic Profile. While all students receive Career Conversations weekly , students have to opt into their preferred Industry Newsletters, which they can change whenever they want.

This site also provides access to upcoming workshops and Industry Meet Ups, our schedule of employer recruiting events, and apply for jobs and internships; activity increases for all of these in the fall, and the schedule is updated daily.

Summer Xploration 2020
Lafayette Kids, a student group that partners with local communities to address the educational opportunity gap, is launching a new initiative this summer. The Virtual Summer Play Initiative will offer K-12 students who live in public housing and lack the space and opportunities to play a positive outlet during the summer. "Bigs" (W&M students) will meet virtually with youth weekly for one-hour sessions, via a Zoom or other technology, to play age-appropriate games and build relationships.

This pilot will also help to prepare our student programs to develop more virtual service opportunities with youth during the fall.
Student Health Services
As your partner in health, William & Mary takes pride in safeguarding students' well-being. The latest vaccine to prevent cancer. Gardasil9, the same vaccine that the CDC recommends for humans aged 11-26, is available in the gorgeous McLeod Tyler Wellness Center when students return to the university this Fall.
