July Letter from the CEO

Compassion

A person who is compassionate can understand and empathize with others, recognize their struggles, and offer support without judgment. A community built on compassion thrives because it fosters cooperation, strengthens relationships, and promotes mental and emotional well-being. It is the foundation of a kinder, more connected world.

Let’s take a moment and reflect on how we can be leaders of change within our community. How do we advocate for kindness and equality, reducing stigmatisms of homelessness, physical and mental disabilities, mental health issues, and addiction? How do we support these individuals without casting judgement? The world has been hard enough for some and the circumstances are unthinkable. Now more than ever we need to advocate for making a difference in another’s life and together strive to show compassion.

A person feeling valued will lead to improved mental health, lower stress levels, and a greater sense of belonging. Acts of kindness foster happiness and reduce anxiety. Compassion starts with active listening, paying attention to the experiences and feelings of others without interrupting or assuming. Practicing kindness, expressing gratitude, and offering support, even in small ways, can make a significant difference. Embracing diversity and understanding different perspectives allows for a more empathetic and inclusive world.

Be the change the world needs. By prioritizing kindness and understanding in our interactions, we create spaces where people feel safe, valued, and supported. Lead by example and don’t just walk by or turn your head to those in need.

Germ of the Month

 Toxocariasis

Kristel Mattice; RN, MSN

Toxocariasis, also known as roundworm, is a parasite that can spread from animals to people. Commonly found in dogs and cats, this parasite spreads through contact with feces of an animal infected with toxocariasis. There are rare cases in which a person can become infected by eating undercooked meat of lamb or rabbit.

The symptoms vary from mild to severe, to include fever, cough, wheezing, abdominal pain, or enlargement of liver. In some cases, a person’s vision may become impacted from the parasite causing blurred vision, loss of vision, or irritation of the eye. Prevention for this parasite includes having cats and dogs regularly tested at their veterinarian for worms, practice good hand hygiene when handling food or animals.
