From the Desk of Shira Reifman, Director of Keren Or
Dear Friends,

It’s camp time at Keren Or and we’re having an incredible summer! This year’s camp theme is “Jerusalem.” Our students have learned about so many special places in our beloved capital, including the Machane Yehuda market, the Old City, numerous museums, and even Cinema City! We love helping our students connect with their environment and make sense of the world through experiential activities and educational fun!

Summer is the best time to be a kid, and we’re making sure that our students also enjoy all of the thrills of summer – from swimming and time outdoors to horseback riding and arts and crafts – in safe, adapted ways.

This summer, we also launched a brand new internship program for college students. Our interns have added so much enthusiasm and youthful energy to the Keren Or camp, and we’re proud to be playing a small role in training the next generation of special education professionals.

I hope you’re having as much fun this summer as we are, and I invite you to visit us in Jerusalem! Until then, I send you my warmest wishes for a healthy, safe, enjoyable and enriching summer.

Summer love,
International Conference on Vision at Keren Or
This month Keren Or hosted an international conference sponsored by The Israeli Organization for Child Development and Rehabilitation, directed by Nava Gelkopf, the Coordinator of Rehabilitation Services at Keren Or.

The conference focused on vision assessment and rehabilitation in children who were born prematurely. Professor Andrea Guzzetta from Pisa, Italy, a leading
scholar in the field, spoke about the importance of early detection of Cortical Visual Impairments (CVI) in infants, and the crucial role that environmental adaptations play in helping these young children see and recognize their surroundings.
Professor Guzzetta and his colleagues were treated to a tour of Keren Or, and were incredibly impressed by our level of professionalism and Israel’s work in this field. We were honored to have the opportunity to learn from world-renowned academics, and to share our knowledge based on years of experience working with children with CVI.
NEW Summer Internship Program!
This summer, we were delighted to welcome 15 American, college-age interns to Keren Or. Most of the interns are participating in the OU-JLIC Summer Internship Program. For 7 weeks they are interning at Keren Or 6 hours per day, while studying Jewish texts and deepening their Jewish identity in the evenings.
Many of the summer interns are heading towards careers in para-medical therapies or special education. Over the course of the summer, they’ve received training sessions about Cortical Visual Impairment, working in the multi-sensory snoezelen room, how to do physical therapy exercises, and much more. Each volunteer was assigned to a particular classroom where they got to know the students, and were able to practice their newly acquired skills safely and effectively. It has been incredible to watch the interns develop relationships with the students, and with the Israeli staff members in their classrooms.

These special individuals and future professionals have been a very happy addition to our summer programming, when our regular volunteers are often unavailable!  We thank them for dedicating their summer to the children of Keren Or and hope they will come back to visit!
