It has been a great summer in Lincoln Park! We are excited to announce that our next LCA Summer Social will be on Wednesday, August 3 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Ogden Mall Park, which is located at the corner of North Hudson Avenue and West Menomonee Street across from the Midwest Buddhist Temple.
Our monthly LCA Summer Socials are casual gatherings of friends and neighbors to socialize and meet new people. Kids and dogs are welcome. We encourage you to bring the beverage of your choice, as well as snacks or a picnic. The events are free and open to all.

Group of Cadettes Work to Beautify Lincoln Central Park
This summer, you might be seeing some bright and colorful changes at Lincoln Central Park, located on the northwest corner of Dickens and Lincoln Avenue. The flowers are flourishing, some of the benches received a bright new coat of paint and decorative rocks are hidden throughout the flowers to attract butterflies.
This is thanks to a group of Girl Scout Cadettes. The local 6th graders are working towards their Silver Award, where they are required to work on a sustainable community project. The group partnered with LCA to first create the butterfly garden and have been expanding their work to more improvement projects throughout the garden.
The Cadettes meet every Sunday evening at the park, and have been mulching, planting seeds, watering the plants, painting the benches, painting rocks and leaving uplifting messages in the park with chalk. Their hope is to create a milkweed garden as guided and mentored by Deirdre Graziano so that butterflies have a safe haven in the park. They are also considering creating some bird feeders for the park.
Thank you to these amazing group of Cadettes for working to beautify Lincoln Central Park!

New Engagement Committee Commissions Custom LCA Map
With a mission to grow LCA membership and to bring neighbors together more often, we formed an Engagement Committee at the start of this year.
At events, we’re often asked: What is LCA? What is our function? What are our geographic boundaries?
Lincoln Central Association was formed in 1958, after similar neighborhood preservation and enhancement groups were established in Old Town (1948) and Mid-North (1950). LCA advocates for the preservation of historic structures (the federally landmarked Yondorf Hall) and areas (the city landmarked Halsted-Willow Gateway.) We pay for maintenance and infrastructure at pocket parks within our boundaries, including the award-winning community garden at Fire Station Park. We work closely with aldermen on issues of density and height rules, public safety, and beautification. We host parties and gatherings in our parks and in the neighborhood.
To make clear our boundaries, we commissioned artist Joe Mills (https://www.joemills.com) to create a map of Lincoln Central. We’ve been distributing small stickers of that map at our gatherings. It’s especially popular with teens and young adults, who say they’ll put LCA on their personal computers.
We’ll put the map on paper, cups, tote bags, and t-shirts. Stay tuned, and join us! Committee work is a great way to be a part of LCA.

Fifth Star Band to Give Free Show at Bauler Park on Aug. 7
On Sunday, August 7 from 3:30 – 5 p.m., Fifth Star Band will give a free concert in Bauler Park!
A modern take on American traditional rock, The Fifth Star Band grooves to a funky, old school beat that’s guaranteed to get you dancing. Drawing inspiration from Anderson East, The Revivalists, and Van Morrison, this Chicago-based, roots rock band continues to deliver upbeat, soulful tunes that are elevated by their energetic live performances. Since emerging on the Chicago music scene in the summer of ‘16, TFSB has played all around the city at venues such as The Cubby Bear, Martyrs’, Reggie’s, The Elbo Room and multiple yearly stops at The Store. Despite a minor hiatus after the December 2019 release of their first full-length album, Vice, the band resumed making their mark on the city's music landscape including a command performance in 2021 at Bauler Park.
We are overjoyed to have them return on Sunday, August 7th at Bauler Park to rock the neighborhood!

LCA Joins Neighborhood Orgs to Ask Mayor for Voice in Interim Alderman
On July 21, 44rd Ward Alderman Michele Smith announced that she will be retiring on August 12. Alderman Smith has been a wonderful supporter of LCA and our initiatives, so it is important to us that her successor will be a strong voice for our neighborhood. On July 22, we joined six other organizations to send a letter to Mayor Lightfoot asking her to consult with our organizations so we have a voice in Alderman Smith’s interim preplacement.

Vanille Patisserie Offers Sweet Treats on Clark Street
What a beautiful patisserie this is! You enter and the glass shelves are full of the most mouthwatering sweets, tables inside and outside for your enjoyment of the delectable things that Vanille makes. I was greeted by Sophie Evanoff who has been running this establishment for 11 years now. This fantastic neighborhood business made it through the pandemic, has a thriving retail business and her main focus is satisfying her local clients.
Vanille is strictly retail now and one of their best sellers are the macaroons and cheesecake. They love to do wedding cakes and especially like to see families, dogs and kids to come in and enjoy their hot chocolate, coffee and the best croissants in the city! I was lucky enough to take one away and warmed it up and ate it at lunch time instead of my lunch! It was delicious.
The company has 28 employees, some in the French Market, but all of the baking is done here on Clark Street. They have an outdoor café seating arrangement that is comfortable and inviting. I would recommend ordering a cup of chocolate or tea and a sweet, and you could sit for a long time with a friend.
Stop by Vanille Patisserie the next time you are wandering to the Zoo or just taking a walk. This is a gem in our neighborhood!
