COABE and Amazon are partnering to remove barriers to employment for adult learners. At one time, a high school diploma was essential to be considered for employment at Amazon. But now, thanks to this partnership, adult learners can apply for positions with a wage between $15-$19 per hour, plus retirement package and Career Choice, a program that pays for 80% of their college education. Two years after their hire date, the requirement for a bachelor's degree to obtain a management position will be removed.

Amazon will also conduct field trips should you wish to bring your adult learners to an Amazon site. Contact sharonmbonney@coabe.org for more details.

Dear COABE Members,
I am so grateful and humbled by the recent appointment of the Board of Directors to the newly crafted position of Chief Executive Officer for the Coalition on Adult Basic Education! As you may know, I have worked with and for COABE in some capacity for twenty years, first in a contracted administrative position for ten years, followed by seven years as COABE's full time manager, and then serving in the recent role of executive director for three years prior to this appointment.

With the change in my title from Executive Director to Chief Executive Officer, my focus will shift as well. I will now tackle building foundation support for adult education, building business partnerships, and representing our field on the national stage.

I have appointed Michelle Chiles to the Chief of Staff position to run the internal operations of the organization, and I know that she will execute this new role beautifully!

We are also building capacity internally with a number of new hires to ensure the work of the organization runs smoothly as our exponential growth continues. An announcement with more details will be shared shortly.

I am also delighted to welcome our member-elected board president, Dr. Don Finn, and the following new board members: President Elect, Jody Angelone: Vice President, Debbie Faubus-Kendrick; Secretary, Jeff Arnott;  Region 2 Representative, Shaketta Thomas; Region 4 Representative, Michael Matos; and Region 6 Representative Olga Escamilla!

As we work together to transform the field of adult education, we will continue to seek your input and to look for ways that we can ensure that COABE stays mission driven, member focused, and results oriented.

With this in mind, I would like to encourage you to take action for adult education with 3 quick clicks. Get the details HERE

Thank you again for your membership in COABE, and I look forward to serving you and our field in this new capacity!

Kindly,

Sharon Bonney
Chief Executive Officer
Coalition on Adult Basic Education
Congratulations to Michelle Schallmo at Triton College, Winner of $1,000!

"As the technology coordinator for the Adult Education Department atTriton College, I was looking for curriculum that would enable my students to gain skills necessary for post-secondary and workplace placement. Google's Applied Digital Skills affords students this opportunity. My students are working independently with no prior coding background, and the majority have English as their second language. This curriculum has helped them to develop maps with locations using coding. Additionally, these students have very limited computer backgrounds, some of whom had no prior computer experience before taking classes with me. Now, these students are writing papers, and working in small groups to complete projects that they would in the workforce and in post-secondary education. Everyone is amazed at how adept these students are at creating something from nothing just by using the Applied Digital Skills curriculum and with minimal assistance from me! They have increased their confidence with computers and their self-efficacy is evident from their stories and presentations."

New Adolescent/Adult Form

research underway!

Pearson is validating a new form of the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreen™ for adolescents and adults. Individuals 14-65 years old--with and without dyslexia--are needed to participate.
Pearson is hoping for clinical cases--those with a diagnosis of dyslexia or suspected dyslexia--across the age range.

Testing is scheduled at the examinee's convenience. The testing will be done on a video call at a computer with a professional at another location. You will need to use a desktop or laptop computer with a camera (webcam) and good, reliable internet access.

If you have friends or family members who may be interested, please share the letter(s) with them as well. Parents of adolescents (ages 14-17) as well as adults ages 18-65 can use the same link provided in the letters to apply for the study.

Recently a bipartisan group of House members introduced H.R. 3497, the Jumpstarting our Businesses by Supporting Students (JOBS) Act. This bill is identical to a Senate version of the JOBS Act (S.839), offered by Senators Kaine (D-VA) and Portman (R-OH) earlier this year.

This bill has the potential to make a real difference for adult education , as it would greatly expand the use of Pell Grant funding by allowing its use for high quality, short term, certificate programs in high demand professions - allowing jobseekers to gain the credentials they need now to move up the career ladder.

This is a bipartisan issue - along with the JOBS Act bills introduced in Congress, the Administration has also been supportive of expanding Pell Grants for short term certificates.

Please contact your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the JOBS Act to help adult education participants gain the skills they need and employers demand to be competitive in our 21st century economy.
